Chapter 2 - The Hidden Shadow

The ballroom air suddenly felt thin, the ambient chatter of elite guests fading into a muffled hum. Julian remained kneeling on the marble floor, his dark eyes locked onto his daughter's trembling outstretched finger. The tattoos on his hands flexed as he gripped his knees.

"Lily, honey, look at me," Julian said, his voice dropping to a cautious whisper that commanded absolute attention. "What man? What did he put on the cake?"

"A bad man," Lily whimpered, burying her curly blonde head against Elena's black maid uniform shoulder. "He had a shiny stick. He poked the pink flower and dropped white dust right inside."

Elena gasped, her dark eyes darting toward the service corridor. "Mr. Vance, I swear I didn't see anyone enter from the kitchens. The catering staff has been locked down for security checks all morning."

Julian stood up slowly, his tall frame towering over the kneeling women. His gaze shifted from his weeping daughter to his son, Ethan, who stood quietly clutching his small bow tie, entirely unaware of the lethal undertone hanging in the air.

"Ethan," Julian said, keeping his voice steady to avoid terrifying the boy. "Did you see anyone near the dessert table before we came down the grand staircase?"

Ethan shook his head, his dark eyes wide and innocent. "No, Daddy. Just Elena bringing out the napkins."

Julian didn't hesitate. He reached into his suit jacket, his fingers brushing against the cold steel of a concealed holster before pulling out his encrypted smartphone. He tapped the screen twice, bringing up the live closed-circuit television feed of the ballroom's perimeter. The high-resolution cameras covered every square inch of the sprawling estate, yet the service hallway entrance was a notorious blind spot designed during the 1920s renovation.

"Security," Julian spoke into the phone, his tone dropping into the arctic chill of a man accustomed to absolute obedience. "Lock down the north wing exits immediately. Nobody leaves the premises until I clear every guest and staff member."

A voice crackled through the encrypted earpiece. "Sir, the gate sensors haven't triggered. Everyone who arrived is accounted for in the main hall."

"Then the person who poisoned my son's cake is still standing among my guests," Julian replied, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the crowd of hundred-plus influential elites, politicians, and business associates mingling near the champagne fountain.

Elena helped Lily to her feet, brushing white frosting off the pale yellow dress. The toddler was still sniffling, clutching a tiny white shoe that had come loose during her desperate lunge at the table.

"Mr. Vance, if someone really tampered with the food..." Elena started, her face losing every trace of color.

"If they did, my daughter just saved Ethan's life," Julian interrupted, turning his gaze back to the ruined two-tier cake. He knelt down once more, ignoring the ruined frosting, and reached out with tattooed fingers to pluck a single pink sugar rose from the debris.

He brought it close to his nose, inhaling deeply. Beneath the sweet scent of vanilla and butter, there was a faint, bitter almond tang that didn't belong in a child's birthday dessert.

Cyanide.

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a war drum, but his outward expression hardened into a terrifying mask of controlled fury. Someone inside his own house, someone wearing a tailored suit or an expensive evening gown, had tried to murder his little boy.

He stood up, towering over the crowd, and crushed the poisoned sugar rose in his fist until the pink fragments crumbled into dust between his fingers.
