Chapter 14 - The Final Choice

Julian didn't turn around. He kept his eyes locked onto Thomas's face, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. But the distinct sound of a shotgun sliding into battery echoed from the dark shadows of the stairwell behind him.
"Drop the weapon, Julian," a cold, unfamiliar voice commanded from the top of the stone stairs.
Julian calculated the angles in a fraction of a second. If he spun around to return fire, he would expose his flank to Thomas. If he stayed frozen, he was pinned between two armed operatives in a subterranean dead end.
"You're a coward, Thomas," Julian said, his voice completely devoid of fear, radiating a terrifying, absolute calm. "You always hid behind other men's ambition."
"Call it what you want, Julian. In the end, survival isn't about honor; it's about control," Thomas replied, stepping away from the computer terminal and reaching for a heavy steel pipe wrench resting on the tool rack. "And now, I get to dismantle the Vance legacy piece by piece."
Thomas raised the iron wrench, stepping forward to strike, but before the blow could fall, the heavy concrete ceiling above them rumbled with a sudden, thunderous crash.
Rooaar.
A massive blast tore through the upper sub-level entrance, sending a cascade of dust, concrete chunks, and shattered wood tumbling down the spiral stairs. The operative standing behind Julian let out a startled yell as a heavy oak beam collapsed directly on top of him, pinning him instantly beneath the rubble.
Marcus stepped through the smoke at the top of the stairs, holding a heavy tactical breaching charge in his hands. "Sorry I'm late, boss! The front door put up more of a fight than expected!"
Thomas panicked, lunging forward with the iron wrench toward Julian, but Julian moved with devastating, practiced precision. He sidestepped the wild swing, swept his leg behind Thomas's knees, and brought the butt of his sidearm down hard against Thomas's temple.
Thomas dropped like a stone, crashing heavily onto the concrete floor and sliding into unconsciousness beside the server rack.
Julian stood over him, breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling as he lowered his weapon. The silver watch on his wrist ticked steadily, marking the exact moment the nightmare ended.
"Secure the hard drives and download every server log," Julian ordered Marcus, wiping a streak of soot from his forehead.
"Done and encrypted," Marcus replied, clicking a metal thumb drive into his tactical unit. "Federal agents are securing the perimeter upstairs. Agent Miller wants a word."

Julian turned away from the unconscious traitor, walking slowly back up the stone stairs and stepping out into the grand foyer of the mansion.
