Chapter 12 - The Vault at Midnight

"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper that only his loyal second-in-command could hear. "Look at the home server alert."

Marcus glanced down at his own wrist-mounted datapad, his face draining of color. "Boss... someone is cleaning out the physical cold-storage vault in the basement. The one containing the master encryption keys for our entire global shipping grid."

Julian looked back at Thomas Vance, whose calm, unblinking expression confirmed every suspicion. Victor had been the loud, clumsy distraction. Thomas was the real architect.

"Agent Miller," Julian said, turning sharply to the federal investigator. "Place Thomas Vance under arrest immediately for conspiracy to commit industrial espionage and high-level corporate sabotage."

Agent Miller blinked in surprise, looking between Julian and Thomas. "Mr. Vance, I can't arrest a registered corporate officer without a formal warrant or verified physical evidence."

"You have your evidence right there in his tactical convoy," Julian retorted, gesturing toward the unmarked sedans. "Every encrypted data-mirroring device used to download my vault is sitting in the lead vehicle's comms rig."

Thomas chuckled softly, taking a slow step back toward his men. "You're slipping, Julian. Too much time playing family man. You think you've won because you caught your foolish brother on a rusty cargo ship, but you've left the front door wide open."

Before Marcus or the federal agents could react, Thomas raised a small electronic detonator and pressed the central button.

Pop.

A thick cloud of industrial smoke grenades erupted from beneath the undercarriages of Thomas's black sedans, instantly blinding everyone on the pier in a dense, choking white fog.

"Get down!" Julian roared, shoving Ethan and Lily flat against the concrete as automatic gunfire began to pepper the metal hull of the freighter above them.

Through the dense smoke, the sound of screeching tires echoed across the pier as Thomas's tactical convoy peeled out, accelerating toward the coastal highway before anyone could return fire.

Agent Miller coughed, waving the smoke away from his face. "Damn it! All units, pursue the black sedans! Block the highway exits!"

"Forget chasing them on the highway," Julian said coldly, pulling his children back up to their feet. He scooped Lily into his arms once more and gripped Ethan's hand tightly. "They're heading back to the estate. That's where the master vault is."

"Marcus, get the chopper prepped on the roof of Berth Three," Julian ordered, his eyes burning with relentless focus. "We're flying back."

As they raced toward the auxiliary helicopter pad, the morning sun finally broke fully through the clouds, casting a harsh, golden light over the churning ocean. Ethan looked up at Julian with wide, innocent eyes.

"Daddy, are we still playing hide and seek?" Ethan asked softly.

Julian looked down at his son, the bitter taste of betrayal in his mouth, but his expression softened as he brushed a speck of soot from the boy's lapel.

"No, buddy," Julian replied, his voice steady and resolute. "We're going home to finish it."
