Chapter 1 - The Shattered Sugar

The two-tier wedding cake decorated with pink and white roses lay in ruins on the marble floor of the grand ballroom. Splintered gold stand pieces mixed with pale frosting and delicate sponge.

Elena, the woman in the maid uniform, pressed a gloved hand to her mouth. Her fair skin went pale as she stared at the mess.

Little Lily stood in her pale yellow dress, white shoes smudged with pink buttercream, her curly blonde hair catching the crystal chandelier light.

Julian, the tall, handsome man in the black suit with dark hair, a neat beard, and ink-stained tattoos across his strong hands, stepped forward. His dark eyes narrowed in cold disbelief. He wore a silver watch that ticked with heavy, expensive rhythm.

Beside him stood Ethan, the young boy in a sharp black suit and a matching bow tie, looking bewildered.

"Elena, what on earth happened here?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register that made the surrounding guests step back. "I hired you to watch the children, not to let them tear the reception apart before the ceremony even begins."

Elena dropped to her knees beside the crying toddler, her voice shaking as she tried to shield the girl. "Mr. Vance, I am so sorry. I turned my head for just one second to grab the sparkling cider, and Lily just ran straight for the table. She shoved it with all her might."

"That is completely unacceptable negligence," Julian snapped, his hand tightening around his wrist as he checked his watch. "This cake was flown in from Manhattan. More importantly, it was the centerpiece for my son's seventh birthday celebration."

"Daddy, don't yell at Elena," Ethan whispered, tugging on the hem of Julian's jacket with his small hand. "It's just cake. My tummy didn't even want it anyway."

"It's not about the cake, Ethan. It's about respect, discipline, and responsibility," Julian said, his jaw tightening as he knelt down on the cold marble floor next to his weeping daughter.

He looked deeply into Lily’s tear-streaked face, his expression softening just a fraction, though the tension in his broad shoulders remained locked.

"Lily, why did you do that?" Julian asked softly, forcing his tone to gentle out for the sake of the three-year-old.

Lily hiccuped, wiping her nose with the back of her small hand, and pointed a trembling finger straight toward the dimly lit service hallway in the background.

"A man touched Ethan's cake, put some..." Lily sobbed.

Julian stared at her, freezing instantly.
