Chapter 5 - Smoke and Mirrors

A deafening pop echoed through the grand ballroom, instantly followed by a blinding flash of magnesium light that bleached the entire room in stark white. A thick cloud of gray smoke billowed upward, instantly choking the crystal chandeliers and triggering the overhead fire suppression sprinklers.
"Get down!" Julian roared, lunging forward through the haze, but his boots hit slick puddles of spilled champagne and frosting, sending him skidding across the polished marble.
Alarms wailed shrilly, mixing with the panicked screams of wealthy guests trampling over one another to reach the main exit doors. Through the dense, chemical smoke, Julian caught a fleeting glimpse of Victor sprinting toward the private service corridor that led directly to the underground subterranean garage.
"Marcus, he's heading for the sub-level exit! Cut him off!" Julian shouted into his collar comms, coughing as the acrid smoke filled his lungs.
"Already on it, boss. Security teams B and C have the ramps sealed," Marcus replied over the static-filled line.
Julian scrambled to his feet, ignoring the stinging in his eyes, and charged through the haze. His primary concern wasn't capturing Victor anymore—it was ensuring his children were secure upstairs. If Victor was desperate enough to plant cyanide in a child's birthday cake, he might have left a contingency plan for the family suite.
He vaulted over the ruined wedding cake, his expensive Italian leather shoes crunching on broken porcelain and sticky pink sugar roses. The water from the overhead sprinklers drenched his black suit, soaking the white pocket square and matting his dark hair against his forehead.
He reached the private elevator bank, but the digital display flickered and died, killed by the main power grid shutdown triggered by the smoke alarms.
"Damn it," Julian muttered, ripping off his damp suit jacket and tossing it aside. He turned toward the grand marble staircase that spiraled upward into the gloom of the upper floors.
Taking the steps two at a time, his powerful legs burned with every leap. He reached the second-floor landing just as a heavy explosion rocked the eastern wing of the mansion, shaking the priceless oil paintings on the walls and sending plaster dust raining down from the ceiling.
Julian froze. That wasn't the sub-level garage. That was the exact location of the private family suite.
"Ethan! Elena!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with a sudden, primal terror that he had managed to suppress all day.
He broke into a dead sprint down the long, carpeted hallway, ignoring the smoke rolling out from beneath the ornate double doors of the family quarters. The heavy oak door had been blasted off its reinforced hinges, splintering into jagged shards of wood across the Persian rug.
Julian drew his concealed firearm from its holster, sweeping the barrel across the ruined threshold as he stepped into the smoke-filled nursery.
Elena was lying unconscious near the velvet armchair, her black maid uniform stained with soot and blood.

There was no sign of Ethan or Lily anywhere in the room.
