Chapter 6 - The Empty Cradle

The acrid smell of high-grade military C4 hung heavy in the nursery, mixing with the scent of scorched wallpaper and melted plastic toys. Julian lowered his weapon slowly, the metal feeling freezing cold against his damp hand. His dark eyes scanned the devastation, taking in every ruined detail with horrific clarity.
"Elena!" Julian dropped to his knees beside the unconscious woman, pressing two fingers against the side of her neck.
A weak pulse thudded beneath his fingertips. Elena groaned, her eyelids fluttering open as she coughed violently, spitting out gray soot.
"Mr... Mr. Vance," she gasped, her fair skin bruised and blackened. "The... the window... a man in a tactical mask..."
Julian didn't wait for her to finish. He spun around, surveying the shattered bay window that opened onto the third-floor balcony overlooking the cliffside gardens. Heavy rappel ropes hung over the stone balustrade, swaying gently in the damp mountain breeze.
Victor hadn't just fled; he had executed a coordinated extraction team. He had used the chaos downstairs as a diversion while a secondary operative scaled the exterior wall to snatch the children.
"Marcus," Julian spoke into his comms, his voice dangerously quiet, stripped of all humanity. "We have a breach in the family suite. Elena is injured. Victor's men have Ethan and Lily."
Silence hung on the line for two agonizing seconds before Marcus replied, his tone grim. "Sir, the lower gate sensors just triggered. A black armored SUV punched right through the security bollards and is heading down the coastal highway toward the docks."
"Lock down the airspace. Scramble the chopper," Julian ordered, standing up with terrifying grace. "If they cross the county line, I want every bridge and tunnel in this state blown or blocked."
"Boss, the Coast Guard is already issuing a maritime alert for the private harbor," Marcus said. "Victor has a freighter idling three miles offshore under a shell corporation flag. That's where they're heading."
Julian didn't waste another breath. He turned away from the ruined nursery, his mind calculating every possible escape route, every weakness in his brother's twisted logic. Victor wanted the Vance empire, but taking the children meant he was no longer playing a corporate game of chess—he had entered a blood feud.
As Julian descended the grand staircase, stepping back into the flooded ballroom where elite guests were still being escorted out by local authorities, he noticed something glinting on the marble floor near the wreckage of the wedding cake.
It was a small, pale yellow bow—one of the hair clips Lily had been wearing in her curly blonde hair.
Julian picked it up, slipping the tiny fabric loop into his pocket alongside the evidence bag containing the poisoned sugar rose. The contrast between the innocent yellow ribbon and the deadly poison was a stark reminder of what he was fighting for.
He walked out through the shattered glass doors of the mansion into the pouring rain, ignoring the flashing red and blue lights of the arriving police cruisers. He climbed directly into the passenger seat of his waiting matte-black interceptor where Marcus sat behind the wheel, engine idling with a low, predatory rumble.
"Drive," Julian said simply, racking the slide of a heavy automatic rifle.

Marcus slammed the transmission into gear, the tires spinning on the wet pavement before launching the vehicle down the winding mountain pass like a missile.
