Chapter 8 - Boarding the Iron Beast

The interceptor skidded violently across the wet concrete pier, coming to a halt just inches from the rusted hull of the Siren's Call. Before the tires had even stopped spinning, Julian pushed his door open and hit the ground, the driving rain instantly soaking his black shirt.

He raised his rifle, scanning the empty pier. The storm winds howled through the massive shipping containers stacked like giant Lego blocks along the docks, creating a disorienting maze of shadows.

"Cover the rear ramp!" Julian ordered Marcus over the comms, moving forward with disciplined, tactical precision.

He climbed the slippery steel steps of the gangway two at a time, his boots clanging loudly against the grated metal. The heavy iron door leading into the freighter's main cargo hold stood ajar, swinging back and forth with a rhythmic, metallic groan.

Julian slipped through the doorway into the dim interior. The air smelled of stale diesel, saltwater, and rust. Rows of empty shipping crates lined the cavernous hold, casting long, menacing shadows under the flickering yellow emergency lights.

"Daddy!"

A muffled cry echoed from somewhere deep within the bowels of the lower deck.

Julian froze, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. "Ethan?" he called out, keeping his voice low but carrying.

"Over here! They locked us in!"

The voice came from behind a heavy steel bulkhead door marked with industrial warning labels. Julian rushed forward, checking the electronic keypad beside the door. The control panel had been smashed, its internal wiring glowing with faint sparks.

Without hesitation, Julian pulled a small breaching charge from his tactical belt, slapping the magnetic explosive against the reinforced locking mechanism. He stepped back behind the corner of a steel container and triggered the detonator.

Boom.

The muffled blast blew the heavy iron bolts clean out of the frame. Julian kicked the smoking door inward, the metal groaning as it hit the interior wall.

Ethan and Lily sat huddled together in the center of a small, windowless tool room. Ethan’s black suit was wrinkled and stained with soot, his small bow tie crooked, while Lily wore her pale yellow dress, her curly blonde hair messy, clutching her single white shoe like a treasured security blanket.

"Daddy!" Ethan sobbed, leaping up and throwing his arms around Julian's waist the moment he stepped inside.

Julian dropped his rifle, falling to his knees and wrapping both arms around his children, pulling them tight against his chest. The tattoos on his hands trembled slightly as he buried his face in Ethan's hair, breathing in the scent of rain and childhood.

"You're safe. I've got you," Julian whispered fiercely, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. He looked down at Lily, who sniffled and reached up to touch his bearded cheek with her small, sticky fingers.

"The bad man took our shoes off," Lily whispered innocently.

Julian pulled them both up, scooping Lily into his arms while keeping Ethan securely gripped by the hand. "We're leaving. Now."

Before they could reach the blown doorway, the sharp click of a pistol hammer cocking echoed from the shadows behind them.

"I wouldn't move an inch, brother," Victor’s voice sneered from the doorway.
