Chapter 10 - The Fall of the Architect

Before Victor could complete his sentence, Julian shoved Lily gently behind a heavy steel workbench and drew his sidearm in a single fluid motion.

Bang.

The gunshot roared inside the confined tool room, the deafening echo bouncing off the metal walls.

Victor gasped, his eyes widening in shock as the 9mm pistol slipped from his fingers and clattered onto the concrete floor. He stumbled backward, clutching his right shoulder where a neat, crimson stain began to bloom rapidly across the wet fabric of his navy suit.

"Damn you..." Victor wheezed, collapsing against the metal doorframe before sliding down into a heap on the floor.

Julian stepped forward, kicking Victor's fallen pistol far out of reach before pressing the barrel of his own weapon inches from his brother's forehead. The air smelled sharply of cordite and copper.

"It's over, Victor," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

Heavy footsteps echoed down the metal corridor outside, followed by Marcus's gruff voice shouting over the comms channel. "Boss! We've secured the main deck. Local authorities and federal agents are boarding now. The ship isn't going anywhere."

"Secure him," Julian commanded, lowering his weapon just an inch as Marcus and two tactical officers rushed into the room with zip-ties drawn.

Marcus took one look at Victor groaning on the floor, then shifted his gaze to Julian and the children. "You all right?"

"We're fine," Julian replied shortly, turning immediately back toward the workbench.

He knelt down, scooping Lily into his arms and extending his free hand to Ethan. "Come on, kids. We're going home."

As Marcus's men hauled Victor away in heavy plastic restraints, screaming curses and threats that echoed down the dark steel corridor, Julian led his children out of the rust-streaked cargo hold and back onto the open deck of the freighter.

The storm was finally beginning to clear. Through the heavy gray clouds breaking over the Pacific horizon, the first pale rays of dawn began to spill across the dark water, painting the sky in shades of amber and gold.

Paramedics and federal agents swarmed the pier below, flashing lights reflecting off the wet concrete. As Julian walked down the metal gangway holding his children tight, a federal investigator stepped forward to block his path, holding an open leather badge wallet.

"Mr. Vance? I'm Agent Miller, federal task force. We need a full statement regarding the corporate security breaches and the poisoned substance recovered from the..."

Before the agent could finish his sentence, a loud commotion broke out near the perimeter gate behind them.
