Chapter 13 - The Final Stand at the Estate

The matte-black tactical helicopter touched down smoothly on the helipad of the Vance Estate, its twin rotors kicking up swirling clouds of ash and crushed flower petals from the ruined wedding celebration still littering the front lawns.

Julian stepped out first, shielding Ethan and Lily as they descended the metal stairs into the cool morning air. The grand mansion loomed before them, its reinforced oak doors scarred by the earlier explosion, standing slightly ajar like the jaws of a sleeping beast.

"Marcus, secure the perimeter doors. No one enters or leaves," Julian instructed, handing the children over to a trusted domestic guard detail waiting at the side entrance. "Stay inside the panic room until I give the clear signal."

"Be careful, boss," Marcus warned, handing Julian an extended magazine for his sidearm. "Thomas isn't like Victor. He doesn't make emotional mistakes."

Julian didn't answer. He racked the slide of his weapon, the metallic click echoing sharply in the quiet foyer. He stepped inside the mansion, leaving the shattered remnants of the wedding cake and the pale yellow rose petals behind him on the marble floor.

The house was deathly silent. The air smelled of ozone and burnt copper wiring. Julian moved through the grand ballroom, his polished boots making no sound on the scorched carpet as he approached the hidden staircase leading down to the subterranean vault level.

The heavy steel vault door stood wide open, its biometric locking mechanism smoking from a high-voltage override charge.

Julian crept down the spiral concrete steps, keeping his back pressed flat against the damp stone wall. As he reached the bottom landing, a soft glow of computer monitors illuminated the subterranean chamber.

Thomas Vance stood in front of the open vault, his tactical vest discarded, typing rapidly into the primary master terminal. Several portable hard drives sat stacked neatly beside the keyboard, glowing with green LED transfer lights.

"It's over, Thomas," Julian's voice cut through the silence like a razor blade.

Thomas didn't jump. He didn't even stop typing. He simply pressed the final 'Enter' key, locking the data transfer into the secure cloud server before turning around to face Julian with a calm, venomous smile.

"You're right about one thing, Julian," Thomas said smoothly, his hands resting casually on the edge of the metal desk. "It is over. The master encryption keys have just been mirrored to three independent offshore servers. The Vance empire legally belongs to the board of directors now—and I hold the controlling votes."

"You'll spend the rest of your natural life in a supermax federal penitentiary before you ever see a dime of those shares," Julian said, raising his sidearm and leveling it directly between Thomas's eyes.

Thomas chuckled, shaking his head slowly. "Do you really think I came here alone, Julian? Look behind you."
