Chapter 9 - The Darkness Falls

The emergency backup generators kicked in three seconds later, casting a sickly, amber-toned hue over the stairwell. The hum of the ventilation system died instantly, leaving behind an oppressive, suffocating quiet. Superintendent Hayes cursed under his breath, tapping his unresponsive smartphone screen which now displayed a permanent 'No Service' warning. The fiber-optic uplink hadn't just been cut by district control; the entire campus network had been wiped clean by an external override command originating from an unknown terminal.
"What did you do?" Hayes yelled, grabbing Toby by the shoulder in the dim amber light. "Did you set a dead-man's switch?"
"I told you," Toby panted, ducking away from the superintendent's grasp. "I'm not working alone. There are people on the outside who have been waiting years for this exact moment."
Sarah pulled a small tactical flashlight from her blazer pocket, clicking it on to reveal the terrified faces of the two security guards standing near the exit. The beam of light cut sharply through the dust motes dancing in the stale air. "Hayes, your time is up. The board cannot protect you anymore. The cover-up requires too many moving parts, and people are starting to break rank." She turned her gaze to Marcus Vance Jr., whose heavy frame was trembling against the concrete wall. "Isn't that right, Marcus? How many other files did you delete at the superintendent's direct command?"
Marcus looked down at his polished black boots, his chest heaving as he fought an internal battle between self-preservation and loyalty to the administration. The heavy-set officer opened his mouth to speak, but before a sound could escape his lips, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from the floor above them.
The heavy fire door at the top of the stairwell began to buckle inward, as if something massive and heavy was ramming against it from the hallway side.
"What is that?" one of the security guards stammered, raising his flashlight toward the ceiling landing.
The metal door groaned loudly, rivets popping from the drywall with dusty explosions of plaster. With one final, violent crash, the door flew open entirely, revealing a figure standing in the strobe-lit hallway. It was Clara, the quiet student from Room 412, holding the master override console she had pulled directly from the teacher's podium before slipping out of the classroom unnoticed.

"Class is dismissed, Mr. Hayes," Clara said calmly, her young voice carrying an eerie, unshakeable confidence as she held up a thumb drive containing the complete administrative ledger. "And the whole world is watching."
