Chapter 6 - The Superintendent's Shadow

Superintendent Hayes stood tall in the doorway, his custom-tailored navy suit unwrinkled despite the chaos unfolding around him. His silver hair was combed back with military precision, and his cold, calculating blue eyes scanned the stairwell, quickly assessing the tableau before him: Marcus standing frozen with his hand near his holster, and Toby slumped against the concrete wall with a bleeding lip. Hayes did not look surprised; rather, he looked profoundly disappointed, as if managing a minor administrative inconvenience rather than a massive institutional scandal.

"Officer Vance," Hayes said, his voice smooth, measured, and terrifyingly calm. "Step away from the student immediately."

Marcus swallowed hard, his hand slowly withdrawing from his holster as he took two paces backward. "Sir, you don't understand. The boy hacked the terminal. He’s transmitting classified district data to outside servers."

"I understand everything quite clearly, Marcus," Hayes replied, stepping down the metal stairs with deliberate slowness. "My phone has been ringing off the hook for the last two minutes. The school board president, the local news affiliates, and the state inspector general are all asking why our security archives are suddenly floating around the internet." Hayes turned his piercing gaze toward Toby. "And you must be young Mr. Miller. Your father was equally persistent, if I recall correctly."

Toby pushed himself up from the wall, wiping the blood from his lip with the sleeve of his white t-shirt. "My dad didn't just walk away from that gym collapse three years ago, and neither did the other kids. You buried the investigation to save your own skin."

"Your father made a tragic mistake," Hayes said softly, stepping closer to Toby until only a few inches separated them. "And now you are making an even greater one."

From the top of the stairwell, Sarah Jenkins appeared, clutching the torn photograph she had found earlier in the hallway. Her face was pale, but her eyes burned with a renewed, fierce determination.

"It's over, Hayes," Sarah said, her voice echoing off the concrete. "The files are mirrored on twelve different external drives. Even if you seize his device, the data is already out of our hands."

Hayes turned slowly to face Sarah, a chilling smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Sarah, dear. Do you really believe a few leaked video clips are going to destroy a multi-million-dollar district? Let me show you what happens to people who bite the hand that feeds them."
