Chapter 10 - The Master Ledger

The amber light of the stairwell cast long, distorted shadows across the concrete steps as Clara stood triumphantly in the doorway. Superintendent Hayes stared at the young girl in sheer disbelief, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly as his polished administrative authority crumbled before his eyes. The master ledger she held in her hand represented thirty years of institutional corruption, embezzlement, and falsified safety inspections.
"Where did you get that?" Hayes rasped, taking an involuntary step backward until his heels hit the metal stair railing. "That console requires a level-five administrator password!"
"Mrs. Jenkins gave it to me during third period," Clara replied evenly, stepping down the stairs with slow, deliberate movements. "She knew you'd monitor the main office terminals, so she routed the bypass through the student resource portal." Clara turned her gaze toward Sarah, offering a subtle, reassuring nod. "The files are already in the hands of the state police cyber unit. They're twenty miles out."
Marcus Vance Jr. slumped heavily against the concrete wall, sliding down until he was sitting on the cold step with his head in his hands. "It's over," Marcus muttered, his voice muffled by his palms. "We're done for. All of us."
"Speak for yourself, Marcus," Hayes snarled, his composure finally shattering completely as he lunged forward to snatch the thumb drive from Clara's hand.
Before Hayes's fingers could wrap around the plastic casing, Toby threw his body forward, tackling the superintendent around the waist and sending both of them crashing down the concrete steps in a tangled heap of limbs and swearing. Sarah cried out, rushing down the stairs with her flashlight illuminating the chaotic scene. The security guards froze, unsure whether to protect their boss or secure their own freedom as the sirens of approaching state police cruisers began to wail in the distance, growing louder with every passing second.
Toby pinned Hayes against the lower landing, his knuckles bruised and bleeding, but his grip was ironclad. Hayes thrashed wildly beneath him, his expensive suit tearing at the shoulder as he tried to free his arms.
"Get off me, you insolent brat!" Hayes screamed, his face purple with rage. "You'll spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security prison for this!"
"No, Hayes," Sarah said softly, standing over them and shining her flashlight directly into the superintendent's terrified eyes. "We are going to walk out those front doors together in handcuffs, and you are going to tell the truth to every parent who lost a child in that gymnasium."

The heavy fire door at the top of the stairs burst open once more, flooding the stairwell with the blinding, flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen state police cruisers parked right outside the school entrance.
