Chapter 7 - The Confiscated Future

Hayes gestured with a slight flick of his wrist, and two armed district security guards materialized behind Sarah in the doorway, blocking any possibility of escape. Sarah did not flinch; she simply lowered her chin and clutched the photograph tighter against her blazer. The air in the stairwell grew stiflingly hot, charged with the palpable electricity of an impending confrontation that had been brewing for three agonizing years. Toby watched the guards with a mixture of anger and calculated caution, his hand sliding slowly toward his pocket where he still held a secondary flash drive containing the encrypted audio logs.

"Confiscate everything," Hayes ordered the guards, his voice devoid of any human warmth. "Phone, flash drives, personal effects. Strip search his locker. If there is a single byte of data remaining on this campus, I want it on my desk within the hour."

The guards stepped forward, grabbing Toby by both arms and forcefully pinning him against the concrete wall. Toby struggled fiercely, kicking his sneakers against the metal stairs, but the larger men subdued him with professional ease, stripping the gray hoodie from his shoulders and emptying his pockets onto the cold floor. Among the items that clattered against the metal was a small, worn silver locket—the exact same locket that belonged to Sarah’s late husband, who had been the lead structural engineer on the gymnasium project before his untimely death.

Sarah gasped, taking an involuntary step forward before the guards blocked her path. "Leave him alone! That locket belongs to me."

Marcus Vance Jr. bent down slowly, picking up the silver locket from the floor. He turned it over in his heavy palms, his eyes widening in sudden realization as he popped the clasp open. Inside was a microscopic micro SD card hidden behind a tiny family portrait. Marcus looked up from the locket, his face pale and slick with nervous sweat, locking eyes with Superintendent Hayes.

"Sir," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "It’s not just video files. This card has the original blueprints with the forged safety signatures."

Hayes stopped dead in his tracks. For the first time since entering the stairwell, the superintendent's polished facade cracked, revealing a flash of genuine panic in his eyes. He snatched the locket from Marcus's hand, staring down at the tiny card with undisguised horror.

"Where did you get this, boy?" Hayes demanded, grabbing Toby by the collar of his white t-shirt and pulling him upward with surprising strength. "Who gave you this locket?"

Toby grinned despite the pain, blood staining his teeth as he whispered right into the superintendent's ear. "My mother left it to me before she died. And she told me to give it to the only person in this school who still has a conscience." Toby shifted his eyes toward Sarah. "She gave it to Mrs. Jenkins."
