Chapter 3 - The Glint of Glass

Back inside Room 412, the atmosphere had shifted from tense anxiety to palpable dread. The dangling power cord continued its slow, hypnotic pendulum swing near the floorboards. Clara, a quiet female student sitting in the third row, stared intently at the black rubber cable. Her brow furrowed as she looked from the unplugged cord up to the empty metal bracket on the wall. The camera's small indicator light, which usually glowed a steady green during recording hours, was now completely dark. Without thinking about the consequences, Clara slowly slid her hand down the side of her wooden desk.

Her fingers brushed against the floor outlet, finding the two-pronged plug that Sarah had disconnected only minutes earlier. With a quick, deliberate motion, Clara reached out and shoved the black plug firmly back into the wall receptacle.

A sharp electrical hum filled the air around the desk. High above on the wall bracket, the dead security camera shuddered. A tiny internal gear clicked twice, and then a bright green indicator light blazed to life, casting an emerald hue across the ceiling tiles. Clara pulled her hand back quickly, her heart pounding against her ribs as she looked up toward the lens, realizing too late what she had just done.

Across the sprawling campus in the basement security control room, Marcus Vance Jr.—a heavy-set man in a crisp police uniform—sat surrounded by banks of glowing monitors. His eyes scanned the grid of live feeds until his gaze locked onto monitor twelve. The previously black screen flickered violently before bursting into full, high-definition color, showing the interior of Room 412 in crystal clarity. Marcus watched as Sarah stood outside the doorway holding a torn photograph, while the students inside nervously whispered among themselves.

Marcus slammed his heavy hands down on the control console, his chair rolling back a few inches with a loud screech. He reached for his radio headset, his breathing turning shallow and ragged.

"Vance to all units," Marcus spoke into the mic, his voice booming through the control room. "Camera twelve is back online. Someone just plugged it in from the inside. We have an active security leak in the west wing."

Before the dispatcher could reply, a sudden movement on monitor nine caught Marcus's eye. Toby Miller was crouching directly beneath the blind spot of the hallway stairwell, holding a small electronic device that was actively interfering with the school's master network.
