Chapter 5 - The Digital Echo

The ping of an incoming notification echoed simultaneously on every smartphone in Room 412. Sarah Jenkins, who had just re-entered the classroom through the side door, froze in her tracks as nineteen students pulled their phones from backpacks and pockets. The eerie blue glow of mobile screens illuminated the children's faces in the dim room. Clara looked down at her screen, her thumb trembling as she unlocked her phone to find an unlisted video file sent from an unknown sender tagged with the school's internal network address.
"What is this?" Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she pressed play on the five-second clip.
The video on her screen showed Marcus Vance Jr. standing in the exact same security control room, furiously deleting digital archives while muttering instructions to an unknown person over the radio three years prior. The timestamp on the footage proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the official report regarding the structural collapse in the old gymnasium had been entirely fabricated to protect the school board's liability. Sarah closed her eyes for a brief moment, feeling the immense weight of the secret she had been forced to carry finally beginning to crush her defenses.
In the stairwell, Marcus lunged forward, grabbing Toby by the collar of his gray hoodie and slamming him against the concrete wall. The signal jammer slipped from Toby's hand, clattering noisily against the steps before skidding out of reach.
"What did you do?" Marcus roared, spittle flying from his lips as his face turned a dark shade of crimson. "What did you send out, you little punk?"
"The truth, you corrupt bastard," Toby spat back, blood trickling from a small cut on his lower lip where he had bitten it during the tackle. "Everyone in the district just got the files. They know about the bribes. They know about the cover-up."
Marcus's face drained of color. He dropped his grip on Toby's hoodie and stared frantically at his own police-issue radio, which was suddenly screeching with a barrage of high-priority emergency dispatch calls from the superintendent's office.

Before Marcus could draw his weapon to regain control of the situation, the heavy metal fire door at the top of the stairwell swung open with a tremendous bang, revealing the imposing silhouette of Superintendent Hayes standing in the harsh light of the main hallway.
