Chapter 14 - The Custodian's Confession

Arthur didn't look up as the state troopers swarmed into the server room, their weapons drawn and pointed directly at his chest. He simply pressed the final enter key on the master console, locking the eradication protocol permanently in place before slowly spinning his chair around to face them. His weathered face was completely expressionless, lined with the deep wrinkles of a man who had carried an unbearable burden for far too long.
"You're too late," Arthur said quietly, his voice remarkably calm given the armed officers surrounding him. "The archives are gone. Every drive, every backup, every scrap of digital paper from the last thirty years has been scrubbed clean."
"Arthur? Why?" Sarah gasped, lowering her flashlight as shock washed over her features. "You of all people—you knew the kids who died in that gym. You helped us clean up the wreckage."
"I cleaned it up because Hayes told me to," Arthur replied, his eyes finally shifting to meet Sarah's gaze with a profound, aching sadness. "And I wiped it today because the truth would destroy more than just the school board, Mrs. Jenkins. It would destroy the town. Every family here relies on the district's funding, corrupt as it may be. Without it, this entire community collapses into bankruptcy overnight."
"That doesn't give you the right to cover up murder!" Toby yelled, stepping forward past the troopers before a heavy hand on his shoulder stopped him.
"It wasn't murder, son. It was negligence born of greed, yes—but the real poison goes much deeper than Hayes," Arthur said, reaching slowly into his pocket and pulling out a small, old-fashioned brass key. He laid the key gently on the corner of the master console. "Hayes was just a puppet. The money didn't stay in his pockets; it went to fund the state infrastructure projects that kept this county afloat after the mills closed down two decades ago."
The lead state trooper stepped forward, grabbing Arthur by the arm and pulling him to his feet. "You're under arrest for obstruction of justice, destruction of federal evidence, and aiding a criminal conspiracy. Move."

As the officers led Arthur away in handcuffs, Sarah walked slowly up to the master console. The countdown on the screen had reached zero, leaving behind a completely blank, black monitor. But as she stared at the glass screen, a tiny reflection caught her eye—not from the monitor, but from the polished chrome surface of the server casing directly behind it.
