Chapter 8 - The Hidden MicroSD

The silence in the stairwell became absolute, broken only by the distant hum of the building's ventilation system. Superintendent Hayes’s grip on Toby’s shirt slowly loosened as the reality of the situation settled over him like a lead blanket. He looked from Toby to Sarah Jenkins, whose expression had transformed from fearful compliance to cold, calculated defiance. The micro SD card held within the silver locket was the smoking gun—the one piece of physical evidence the district had spent three years trying to eradicate, believing it had been lost in the rubble of the gymnasium collapse.

"You knew all along," Hayes said softly, his voice barely above a whisper as he addressed Sarah. "You didn't just take the teaching job for the pension, did you? You’ve been gathering evidence inside my walls for thirty-six months."

"You killed my husband's reputation, Hayes," Sarah said, stepping past the two security guards with a dignity that commanded the space. "You framed him for cutting corners on steel reinforcement beams to save the board money. And you let innocent children suffer the consequences when the roof gave way."

"He made a professional miscalculation," Hayes spat back, his composure returning as he slipped the locket into his inner breast pocket. "And if you push this any further, Sarah, you will find yourself sharing the blame for every penny of embezzlement and negligence this district has ever faced. Your teaching license, your pension, your freedom—it all vanishes today."

Toby wrenched his arm free from the distracted guard's grip, stumbling forward and placing himself defensively between Sarah and the superintendent. "You can't threaten her anymore, Hayes. The moment I uploaded those files, an automated script sent a backup package to a federal investigative journalist in Washington. If anything happens to either of us in the next twenty-four hours, the whole story drops nationwide."

Marcus Vance Jr. took a nervous step back, his hand hovering over his radio. "Superintendent, we need to contain this now. If federal investigators get involved, we are looking at prison time—real prison time."

Hayes raised a single hand to silence Marcus, his eyes fixed entirely on Sarah Jenkins. A dark, manipulative smile crept back onto his face. "A federal journalist? Let’s test that theory, shall we?" Hayes reached into his pocket, pulled out his personal smartphone, and dialed a direct extension. "Hello, security desk? This is Hayes. Lock down all external network routers immediately. Cut the school's fiber-optic uplink to the outside world."

Before the order could be fully transmitted through the handset, the overhead fluorescent lights in the stairwell flickered violently once, twice, and then plunged the entire area into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
