Chapter 13 - The Sub-Basement Labyrinth

The air in the sub-basement was thick with the scent of ozone, damp concrete, and rusting iron pipes that snaked along the low ceiling like giant metal serpents. The emergency amber lights flickered erratically down here, casting long, dancing shadows across the rows of massive server racks that hummed with a deafening, high-pitched whine. Sarah led the way, holding her tactical flashlight steady as her sensible shoes crunched over loose gravel on the floorboards. Toby and Clara followed closely behind, their eyes darting nervously toward the dark gaps between the server rows.
"The core mainframe should be at the end of this corridor," Sarah said over the roar of the cooling fans, her breath pluming slightly in the chilly air. "If anyone is down here wiping the drives, they have to be physically plugged into the master console."
As they rounded the final corner, the beam of Sarah's flashlight illuminated a heavy steel door marked with a bold warning sign: RESTRICTED AREA - AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. The electronic keypad beside the door handle was completely dismantled, its internal wiring exposed and sparking with small, blue electrical arcs.
"Someone bypassed the lock from the inside," Clara observed, kneeling down to inspect a severed fiber-optic cable lying on the floor. "They didn't just use software; they physically severed the main data bus."
Suddenly, a heavy thud echoed from inside the sealed server room, followed by the distinct sound of a digital countdown chiming through the room's internal speakers.
Warning: Data erasure in one hundred and eighty seconds. Fifty percent complete.
"We have to force the door," the lead state trooper shouted, stepping up to the heavy steel barrier and signaling to his partner to bring a heavy battering ram from the tactical kit.
With two synchronized, bone-rattling strikes, the reinforced steel door burst inward, crashing onto the concrete floor of the server room with a deafening roar. Sarah rushed through the smoke and dust, sweeping her flashlight beam across the racks of blinking servers until the light locked onto a solitary figure sitting in front of the master console.

It wasn't an administrator, nor was it a hired security thug. Sitting in the swivel chair with his fingers flying across the glowing keyboard was the school's mild-mannered head custodian, Arthur, who had worked in the building for over thirty years.
