Chapter 12 - The Ghost in the System

The emergency intercom speakers hissed loudly, cutting through the murmurs of the departing state troopers. The voice that echoed through the hallways was not that of a police officer, nor was it Superintendent Hayes. It was a synthesized, distorted robotic tone that sounded chillingly mechanical.
"Attention, Room 412 and surrounding sectors," the automated voice intoned, repeating the exact words in a continuous, endless loop. "The archival purge protocol has been initiated from a secondary secure server. Total data erasure in six hundred seconds."
Sarah froze, her hand dropping instantly from Toby's shoulder. "That's impossible. Hayes's clearance was revoked the moment the state police arrived."
"It's not Hayes," Clara said, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she stared down at her own smartphone, which was vibrating violently against her palm. "Look at your screens, everyone. Look at the network map."
Toby whipped his phone out of his pocket and tapped the screen. The entire display was covered in a cascading waterfall of green hexadecimal code, eating away at the backup files he had uploaded only minutes earlier. The external server in Washington was rejecting the packets one by one, flagged as corrupted data by an automated security firewall that had just been activated from an unlisted IP address located deep within the school's sub-basement.
"There's a third person," Toby said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Someone higher up than Hayes. Someone who programmed an autonomous fail-safe into the school's mainframe years ago."
The lead state trooper stopped halfway up the stairs, turning back to face them with a suspicious scowl. "What is that broadcast? Is there another terminal active in this building?"
"We have to get to the sub-basement server room immediately," Sarah urged, her voice laced with urgent panic. "If that purge completes, every shred of evidence we just handed you will be wiped clean across all mirrored drives, and there will be no legal proof left of what happened to the gymnasium."
The trooper didn't hesitate. He unclipped his radio, barking orders back to the squad cars parked outside. "Lock down all perimeter exits! Sweep the sub-basement levels now! We have an active data sabotage in progress!"

As the troopers rushed past them toward the maintenance stairwell leading down into the bowels of the building, Sarah caught a fleeting glimpse of a shadowy figure watching them from the end of the second-floor hallway before disappearing around the corner into the dark recesses of the old science wing.
