Chapter 9 - The Clamor In The Kitchen

The infant carrier slammed against the base of the white pantry door, the sudden motion startling the baby into a shrill, piercing wail. Clara dropped to her knees instantly, yanking the plastic hood back to pull the crying infant into her arms, pressing the tiny body frantically against her chest.
On the floor beside the marble island, Julian and Marcus locked in a brutal, silent struggle. Marcus was older, but his movements were terrifyingly efficient—every strike calculated, every hold designed to break joints rather than throw punches. He drove the butt of the suppressed firearm down toward Julian’s shoulder, a sickening crunch echoing as the blow landed.
Julian grunted in pain, his grip slipping from Marcus’s lapel, but he used his momentum to kick out with his heavy boot, catching Marcus square in the chest and sending him crashing backward into the stainless-steel refrigerator.
"You absolute lunatic!" Julian panted, blood trickling from a split lip as he hauled himself up off the floor, using the marble counter to steady his shaking legs.
Marcus didn't scream or curse. He smoothly pushed himself up from the floor, adjusting the lapels of his charcoal-grey suit with an infuriating calm, even as a thin line of blood appeared at the corner of his mouth. He raised the suppressed firearm, leveling it directly at Julian’s chest with a steady, unblinking hand.
"You have remarkable spirit, Julian," Marcus said, his voice entirely even. "It’s a shame you lack the tactical awareness to realize you’re fighting a war that was lost before you even woke up this morning."
Clara scrambled backward on the floor, holding the crying baby tightly as she kicked the pantry door behind her. "Marcus, stop! Don't shoot him! I'll go with you right now. No conditions, no demands."
"You're already coming with me, Clara," Marcus replied without taking his eyes off Julian. "That was never up for negotiation. The only question left to answer is whether your new husband gets to watch us leave or spends the next ten minutes bleeding out on his own pristine white kitchen floor."
Julian’s vision swam slightly from the pain in his shoulder, but he refused to drop his gaze. He took a slow, heavy step forward, placing himself between Marcus and Clara.
"You're going to have to pull the trigger," Julian whispered, his voice steadying as the adrenaline burned through his veins. "Because I'm not letting you take my daughter out of this house."
Marcus’s finger tightened slightly on the trigger. The silence in the kitchen became absolute, broken only by the faint, rhythmic hum of the security camera mounted in the upper corner of the room, recording every pixel of the standoff.
Suddenly, the red blinking light on the camera went solid. A sharp, automated chime—the sound of an incoming override command—rang out from the smart-home hub on the wall.
May you like
Marcus’s eyes flicked upward toward the camera for a split second. In that microsecond of distraction, the front door downstairs was kicked completely off its hinges with a deafening crash of splintered wood.
