Chapter 1 - The Grip Of Deception

The white walls of the nursery seemed to close in as oxygen vanished from the room. Clara’s back slammed against the unyielding drywall, the force of Julian’s grip cutting off her breath. Her fingers clawed frantically at his thick forearms, her red silk blouse tearing slightly at the collar where his knuckles pressed into her pulse point. In the corner of the ceiling, the black dome of the security camera hummed with a mechanical indifference, its tiny red light blinking steadily like a mechanical eye recording every shattered illusion.

"Which camera?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that vibrated through Clara’s skull. His face was inches from hers, dark blue button-down shirt straining across his broad chest as his breathing came in shallow, ragged gasps.

"You’re hurting me, Julian! Let me go!" Clara choked out, her voice thin and desperate. Her blonde wavy hair whipped across her face as she struggled to find purchase against the wall.

"Don't change the subject," Julian snarled, his eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying intensity that held no trace of the man she had lived with for five years. "What did you do to my daughter?"

Across the room, the nurse—still kneeling on the plush white carpet—cradled the crying baby tightly against her grey scrubs. Tears tracked visibly down the nurse's pale cheeks as she rocked back and forth, her hands trembling violently. She looked up from the floor, her voice cracking with residual shock.

"She... she told me to leave the room," the nurse sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at Clara. "She said she wanted to handle the feeding alone. But when I heard the thud and came back, she was standing right over the crib."

Clara’s eyes widened in sudden, sharp panic. She stopped struggling against Julian's grip and glared past his shoulder toward the nurse.

"You lying bitch!" Clara shrieked, the veneer of her frantic anger instantly returning. "You dropped her! I walked in just in time to catch her before she hit the floor!"

"Stop lying, Clara," Julian whispered, his grip tightening just enough to make her gasp. "The audio feed on that security system records forty-eight hours on a continuous loop. I just checked my phone. The app synced the moment I parked in the driveway."

Clara froze, the color draining entirely from her face.

"What... what did you say?" she whispered.

"I heard everything you said to the baby before the nurse even walked back in," Julian replied, his expression turning into a mask of pure ice as he stared down at the woman he thought he knew.
