Chapter 15 - The Silence After The Storm

The red LED light on the detonator blinked once every second, casting a rhythmic crimson pulse across Marcus’s calm, composed face. The sound of the helicopter hovering outside beat against the shattered patio door like the wings of a dying bird.
"Thirty seconds, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, his thumb resting lightly over the plastic toggle switch. "You can walk out through that patio right now and take your chances in the chopper with me, or you can stay here and watch your pristine white nursery burn to ash with your new family inside."
Miller slammed his palm down hard onto the ruggedized terminal on his forearm. The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.
"Upload complete!" Miller roared, blood seeping through the tactical vest on his shoulder. "Quantico has the entire ledger, Marcus! Your accounts are frozen, your assets are seized, and federal marshals are already descending on your extraction point at the north gate!"
Marcus’s calm facade cracked for a fraction of a second. The absolute certainty in his eyes flickered, replaced by a sudden, sharp panic. He looked down at the red detonator, then back toward the shattered patio doors where distant sirens began to wail through the night air.
"It doesn't matter," Marcus hissed, his finger tightening over the toggle switch. "If I don't own the board, no one does."
Before Marcus could flip the switch, Clara moved with the cold, calculated precision of the operative she once was. She didn't scream, she didn't hesitate. She lunged forward from behind the table, sweeping a heavy cast-iron pan off the floor and hurling it with lethal accuracy straight at Marcus’s hand.
The heavy iron connected with a sharp crack, shattering Marcus’s wrist and sending the red detonator spinning through the air, clattering harmlessly across the marble floor before sliding into the shattered glass of the patio.
Marcus screamed, clutching his broken wrist as federal agents swarmed him from all sides, tackling him to the floor and slamming heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists with practiced efficiency.
"Suspect is secured! Secure the perimeter!" Miller barked into his comms, slumping back against the marble island as paramedics rushed through the front door with stretchers and medical kits.
