Chapter 7 - The Price Of Ownership

The sterile white light of the kitchen hummed, casting harsh shadows across the polished marble. Julian strained against Marcus’s grip, his muscles burning, but the other man’s hold remained immovable, anchored by a terrifying, cold certainty.

"Clara isn't your property," Julian spat, his voice vibrating with suppressed rage. "She’s a human being. She chose me."

Marcus let out a quiet, cultured laugh that sent a fresh wave of fury through Julian’s veins. "Chose you? Julian, you don't even know her real middle name, do you? You know the blonde hair, the designer clothes, the curated backstory about her parents dying in a boating accident in Maine. It’s all a beautifully rehearsed performance."

Marcus shifted his weight, loosening his grip just enough to let Julian stumble back an inch, though he kept the baby carrier safely out of reach.

"Ask her about the year 2018," Marcus continued, his eyes locking onto Julian with predatory calm. "Ask her what happened to the last man who tried to play the white knight and rescue her from my arrangement. Spoiler alert: he didn't get a blog post about a peaceful separation."

Footsteps echoed softly from the hardwood hallway. Clara appeared at the entrance of the kitchen, her red silk blouse slightly torn at the shoulder, her blonde hair tangled around her pale face. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Marcus holding the baby carrier.

"Marcus," she breathed, the name slipping out like a curse. All the fierce bravado she had shown in the nursery had vanished, replaced by the posture of a cornered animal.

"Ah, there she is," Marcus said, his tone shifting into one of mild domestic disappointment. "Clara, darling. You really should teach your new pet some manners. Breaking safety chains? Charging down stairs like a bull? It’s so unbecoming of the sophisticated life we spent so much money curating for you."

Clara didn't look at Julian. Her eyes were glued to the infant carrier, her lower lip trembling slightly before she bit down hard to stop it.

"Leave him out of this, Marcus," Clara said, her voice dropping into a flat, dangerous monotone. "The agreement was that I would stay out of your territory as long as my accounts remained untouched. You broke the terms when you tracked me here."

"I broke the terms?" Marcus raised a single eyebrow, his expression darkening for a fraction of a second. "You married an investment banker, Clara. You played house, you had a child with another man, and you thought you could quietly dissolve our legal partnership behind a digital firewall? You built a nursery on top of a sinking ship."

Julian looked back and forth between them, the pieces of a puzzle he never knew existed finally clicking into place, each one more horrifying than the last.

"What are you talking about, Clara?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking with betrayal. "What partnership?"

Clara finally turned her head, meeting Julian’s gaze with eyes that were completely devoid of hope. "It means I was never yours, Julian. Not really. I was an operative placed inside your firm to secure your company’s municipal contracts three years ago. And when I got pregnant... I tried to walk away."
