Chapter 8 - The Contract Of Lies

The kitchen seemed to tilt, the bright white walls blurring into a sickening streak of light and shadow. Julian stepped back, his hand coming up to grip the edge of the marble island for support. The words hung in the sterile air like poison, destroying every single memory, every whispered 'I love you,' every late-night conversation they had ever shared.
"An operative," Julian repeated, the word tasting like ash on his tongue. "You... you targeted me?"
"At first, yes," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as she stared at the floor, unable to meet his eyes any longer. "Marcus needed access to the city’s transit bidding software. My job was to get close to the lead architect—you. But then... the assignment changed. Or rather, I changed. I thought I could outrun him. I thought if I had a baby, if I played the suburban housewife long enough, the past would just dissolve."
Marcus smiled, a cold, empty gesture that reached none of his eyes. "You see, Julian? She has a very active imagination. She forgets that true contracts are written in blood and sealed with non-disclosure agreements that last a lifetime. A child doesn't reset the ledger."
"Shut up, Marcus!" Clara screamed, the sudden flash of anger returning as she took a desperate step forward. "The baby has nothing to do with this! Take me back. Revoke the accounts, wipe the drives, take every cent I've hidden, but leave the child here with her father."
Marcus slowly shook his head, his gaze drifting back down to the infant carrier where the baby had finally quieted down, breathing softly in her sleep.
"You don't get to dictate terms, Clara," Marcus said smoothly. "The child carries your DNA, which means she is an investment. And my investments are never abandoned."
Before Julian could process the threat, a heavy, dull thud came from the direction of the walk-in pantry behind Marcus. The wooden door rattled as if someone were kicking it from the inside. The nurse was trying to break free.
Marcus didn't even turn around. He simply reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek, heavy-duty black suppressor, screwing it onto the barrel of a compact firearm with two swift, practiced turns of his wrist.
Julian didn't hesitate this time. All the shock, all the betrayal, all the despair compressed into a single, blinding surge of adrenaline. He didn't reach for a weapon; he simply drove his entire body forward, tackling Marcus squarely at the waist with the force of a freight train.

The two men crashed hard against the marble kitchen island, the baby carrier slipping from Marcus’s hand and skidding across the polished white floor toward Clara.
