Chapter 6 - Blood In The Kitchen

The scream cut off as abruptly as it had begun, leaving a hollow, agonizing silence in its wake. Julian’s blood ran cold. The ceramic lamp slipped from his fingers, shattering into a dozen jagged pieces against the white carpet.

"No!" Julian roared, abandoning all caution. He slammed his shoulder against the oak door, snapping the brass safety chain from its moorings with a violent crash of splintered wood and torn screws.

The hallway was entirely empty. The brass wall sconces flickered once and died, plunging the upper floor into a dim, shadow-draped corridor. Julian didn't look back to see if Clara was following. He vaulted over the top stair, taking the flight three steps at a time, his boots pounding against the hardwood like war drums.

"Julian, wait! It's a trap!" Clara’s voice echoed weakly from the nursery landing, but he was already gone.

He hit the bottom of the stairs and sprinted into the open-concept kitchen. The bright, sterile white marble countertops gleamed under the recessed lighting, but the room was eerily still. On the floor by the kitchen island lay the nurse’s grey scrub jacket, discarded in a hurried heap. Next to it was the baby’s pink knit blanket, empty.

"Where is she?!" Julian shouted into the empty house, spinning in a frantic circle. His chest heaved as he searched for any sign of his daughter. "Where is my baby?!"

A slow, rhythmic clapping sound came from the shadows near the pantry doors. Marcus stepped out into the bright kitchen light. He was tall, impeccably dressed in a charcoal-grey tailored suit that showed no sign of dust or struggle. His dark hair was slicked back, and his pale eyes held a look of profound, chilling amusement. He held the baby carrier casually in one hand, the infant inside letting out a soft, muted whimper.

"You really are a remarkably predictable creature, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, taking a slow step toward the marble island. "The moment someone threatens the child, all rational thought evaporates. You abandoned your wife in the nursery just to run down here into an open space."

Julian lunged forward, his hands clawing for Marcus’s throat with the force of a desperate animal. But Marcus didn't flinch. With blinding speed, he shifted the baby carrier to his left hand and raised his right, intercepting Julian’s wrists with a grip of steel.

Julian slammed hard against the marble island, the sharp edge bruising his ribs, while Marcus held him effortlessly at arm's length.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Marcus warned softly, his voice dropping an octave. "The nurse is tied up in the walk-in pantry with a very clean, very sharp utility knife resting lightly against her jugular. One wrong move from you, and this little domestic drama gets a great deal messier."

Julian stopped struggling, his chest pressed against the cold marble, his eyes burning with fury as he stared up at the man holding his family hostage.

"What do you want?" Julian snarled through clenched teeth. "Money? The accounts? Take everything. Just leave the baby and Clara out of this."

May you like

Marcus tilted his head, smiling slightly as he looked down at the infant carrier. "Money is just paper, Julian. I want something much more valuable. I want my property back."
