Chapter 10 - The Federal Breach

Heavy, coordinated shouts echoed up from the entryway—"Federal Marshals! Clear the landing! Move, move, move!"
Marcus’s expression shifted from cold amusement to calculating assessment in less than a heartbeat. He didn't hesitate. Instead of firing at Julian, he lowered the weapon, pivoted sharply toward the back kitchen exit that led out to the private patio, and slipped through the sliding glass door just as heavy tactical boots hit the hardwood floor of the hallway.
"Hold your fire! Suspect is moving toward the patio!" a gruff voice barked through the open kitchen threshold.
Three agents in full tactical gear—black ceramic vests, helmets, and assault rifles raised—poured into the kitchen, their flashlights cutting blinding white beams across the pristine white walls. One of them immediately pinned Julian against the marble counter, while another moved to secure Clara and the baby.
"Get off me!" Julian shouted, struggling against the agent's grip as his injured shoulder flared with white-hot pain. "He went out the back! He has a weapon!"
"Stay down, sir! Hands behind your back!" the agent ordered, ignoring Julian’s protests as plastic zip-ties were yanked tight around his wrists.
Clara sat huddled on the floor against the pantry door, shielding the crying infant with her entire body as two female agents knelt beside her, checking the baby for injuries.
"She's fine. The baby's unharmed," one of the agents said into a shoulder radio. "Paramedics need to clear the mother and child immediately."
A tall, sharp-featured man in a dark civilian suit over a bulletproof vest stepped into the kitchen, brushing past the tactical team. His eyes swept the room, noting the shattered ceramic, the blood on the floor, and finally landing on Julian, who was still straining against the agent holding him.
"Julian Vance?" the man asked, flashing a gold badge embossed with the Department of Justice seal.
"Yes! Look, my daughter—" Julian started, panting heavily.
"I know who you are, Mr. Vance," the agent interrupted, his tone brisk and authoritative. "And I know about the Swiss accounts, the corporate espionage, and the man who just walked out your back door. Agent Miller, Federal Protective Services."
Julian stared at him, the zip-ties biting painfully into his skin. "If you knew he was coming, why didn't you stop him before he got inside?"
Agent Miller let out a heavy sigh, looking over at Clara as she was gently helped to her feet by the medical personnel.

"Because, Mr. Vance," Miller said quietly, "Marcus isn't just a fugitive. He’s a federal informant who's been running a deep-cover syndicate for five years. And your wife wasn't just his operative—she was his handler's most vital witness."
