Chapter 12 - The Red Override

The smart-home screen pulsed with a single, glowing sentence written in stark crimson letters: ACCESS GRANTED: PERIMETER COMPROMISED.

Agent Miller’s head snapped toward the wall display, his hand instantly dropping to the service weapon at his hip. "Who authorized a manual override on the local mesh?" he barked at the tactical officer nearest the door.

"Sir, we didn't touch the system. It's coming from an external relay," the officer responded, frantically tapping at the diagnostics screen on his forearm console. "Someone is brute-forcing the primary firewall from a local repeater within five hundred feet."

Julian’s eyes widened as a terrifying realization hit him. "The security camera in the nursery," he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The dome in the corner. It's not just a recording device."

Clara clutched the baby tighter, her eyes darting toward the stairway. "It’s a signal booster. Marcus didn't just install the system for surveillance—he wired a closed-loop radio transmitter directly into the framing of the house."

Before Miller could issue an evacuation order, the recessed lights in the kitchen flickered and died, plunging the room into a deep, suffocating gloom illuminated only by the harsh red glow of the smart-home display and the tactical flashlights.

From somewhere deep within the walls—the muffled, rhythmic thumping of heavy boots returned. Not coming from the front door this time, but from the ventilation shafts directly above the kitchen island.

"Move! All units to the perimeter!" Miller shouted, drawing his firearm as the tactical team formed a defensive semicircle around Clara and the infant. "We’ve got an active intrusion in the duct system!"

The metal grating above the stove rattled violently. Four screws sheared off simultaneously, pinging against the stainless-steel hood as the heavy iron grate dropped onto the marble counter with a loud clatter.

A black-gloved hand reached out from the dark shaft, gripping the edge of the vent opening.

Julian didn't hesitate. Driven by a primal, protective fury that outweighed all logic, he grabbed the heavy cast-iron skillet sitting on the back burner and swung it upward with every ounce of strength he had left in his uninjured arm.

The skillet connected with a dull, sickening thwack against the gloved wrist protruding from the vent. A muffled grunt echoed from within the metal shaft, followed by the sound of someone sliding rapidly backward into the dark network of pipes.

"Hold your fire! Don't shoot into the walls!" Miller yelled, grabbing Julian’s good arm to yank him back out of the line of fire. "You'll hit the gas lines!"

"He's trying to cut off the power grid," Clara panted, her voice trembling as she looked up at Miller. "Marcus doesn't want to kill us here. He wants to force us out into the open where his transport team is waiting."

Miller’s radio crackled to life with static and a frantic voice from the front yard unit: "Command, this is Alpha Team. Black SUV just blew through the perimeter gates on the north side. We're taking—"

The transmission cut off abruptly with a deafening burst of static.
