Chapter 4 - Footsteps On The Hardwood

The heavy boots paced with a slow, methodical rhythm down the lower hallway, pausing briefly near the kitchen where the nurse and the baby had just gone. Julian’s body went rigid. The anger that had fueled his confrontation with Clara evaporated instantly, replaced by a cold, primal instinct for survival. He slowly turned away from the wall, putting himself instinctively between Clara and the open door.
"Stay behind me," Julian commanded in a harsh whisper, his eyes scanning the nursery for a heavy object, his hand landing on the solid wood corner of the white dresser.
"You don't understand," Clara breathed, grabbing the sleeve of his dark blue button-down shirt with frantic strength. "They aren't here for a conversation, Julian. That rhythm... I know that cadence. It's Marcus."
Julian’s hand halted on the dresser. He looked back at her, his brows furrowed in confusion and rising dread. "Marcus? Who the hell is Marcus? An old boyfriend? A debt collector?"
"My husband," Clara whispered the words like a death sentence.
The silence that followed was absolute. The hum of the security camera in the ceiling corner seemed to amplify, a mechanical witness to a marriage built entirely on lies. Julian stared at her, his mind struggling to bridge the impossible gap between the woman he had married and the confession she had just dropped.
"Your... husband?" Julian’s voice cracked slightly, the sheer absurdity of it struggling against the terror of the man walking up their stairs. "Clara, we’ve been married for three years. We had a public ceremony. My parents were there. My sister was a bridesmaid."
"A legal formality," Clara hissed, her fingernails digging into his arm. "An arranged insurance policy to keep me hidden in plain sight. Marcus let me go dormant, but he owns every single asset—including this house, including the accounts, and including my right to walk away."
Heavy, measured footsteps began ascending the stairs. Creak. Creak. Creak. Each step sounded like a falling guillotine.
"If he finds out you found the vault," Clara whispered, her eyes wide and wet with unfeigned terror, "he won't just kill you, Julian. He'll take our daughter to prove a point about ownership."
Julian didn't hesitate anymore. The anger toward Clara vanished, swallowed whole by the overwhelming instinct to protect his child. He ripped his arm from her grip, grabbed the heavy ceramic lamp off the white dresser, and yanked the cord from the wall.
"Get under the crib," Julian ordered, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute command.
"Julian, you can't fight him," Clara pleaded, backing away toward the corner. "Marcus has resources you can't even fathom. He has men everywhere."
"Then it's a good thing I locked the front gate app from my phone three minutes ago," Julian muttered, stepping sideways until he was completely shielded by the doorframe, the heavy ceramic base raised in his right hand.

The footsteps reached the top of the landing. They paused directly outside the nursery door. The brass handle jiggled once, twice, and then slowly began to turn.
