Chapter 3 - The Vault Beneath The Past

The white nursery seemed to tilt on its axis. Clara’s back pressed harder against the drywall as she tried to process the sheer scale of Julian’s discovery. For years, she had meticulously buried her past, locking away every dark secret behind a polished facade of blonde hair, expensive clothes, and curated social media posts. She had convinced herself that the ghosts of her former life were six feet under, silenced by distance and time. But Julian’s words proved she had only been sleeping on a minefield.
"You searched my closet," Clara whispered, her voice trembling not with fear, but with a sudden, bitter realization of betrayal. "You didn't just check the baby monitor app. You’ve been digging through my personal belongings."
"When a man finds a hidden camera app on his wife's phone that streams every room in the house except her own studio, he starts asking questions," Julian retorted, his voice sharp and unyielding. He took a half-step closer, towering over her in the confined space. "And when he opens the floorboards in the master closet, he tends to find things that don't match the fairy tale you sold me."
"It’s not what you think," Clara pleaded, her hands coming up defensively as she tried to touch his arm. Julian flinched away from her contact as if her skin were burning hot. "That money... it was from a settlement. An accident. My past life had nothing to do with us, Julian. I built this family with you because I loved you."
"A settlement?" Julian let out a harsh, humorless laugh that lacked any warmth. "A million dollars wired from a Swiss shell corporation on the exact day a federal fugitive vanished from Miami? Don't insult my intelligence, Clara. I called a lawyer the moment I saw the account number."
Clara’s eyes flashed with sudden terror. The pretense dropped entirely, revealing the desperate survivor underneath.
"You called a lawyer?" she hissed, her voice dropping into a venomous whisper. "You absolute fool. Do you have any idea what you’ve just unraveled? You think you’re playing the betrayed husband, but you’ve just painted a target on this entire house."
"Try again," Julian challenged, leaning down so his face was level with hers. "Explain to me why my daughter’s mother has a Swiss bank account linked to an international embezzlement ring, and maybe—just maybe—I won't hand that flash drive directly to federal marshals tonight."
Before Clara could form a lie, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the hallway downstairs—the heavy front door swinging open, followed by the deliberate, heavy thud of boots on hardwood flooring.
Julian froze, his head snapping toward the open nursery door.
"Did you invite someone over?" Julian demanded, his suspicion instantly pivoting back to Clara.
Clara didn't answer. She was staring past Julian into the dark hallway, her pupils dilated with a horror that transcended anything she had felt all evening.

"That's not the nanny," Clara whispered, her voice turning to ice. "And they aren't here to talk."
