Chapter 9 - The Second Ledger

The fluorescent lights of Arthur Vance’s downtown office buzzed quietly, casting long shadows over the stacks of financial documents spread across the mahogany desk. Outside, the rain had begun to pelt the glass, washing away the remnants of a day that had changed three lives forever.

Marcus sat in a leather armchair, staring blankly at his hands. He had shed his tuxedo jacket, leaving only his crisp white shirt and loosened bow tie. The shock had settled into a heavy, permanent numbness.

Maya stood by the window, holding a cup of black coffee she hadn't touched, watching the streetlights reflect off the wet pavement below.

Arthur slid a thick, leather-bound ledger across the desk toward them. The leather was cracked and worn at the edges, bearing a faded gold embossment that had been partially scratched off with a razor blade.

"This is the ledger David was trying to recover from the cathedral safe," Arthur explained, tapping the cover with his pen. "It doesn't just list the Sterling estate assets. It details every payout made to third-party conspirators over the last twenty years."

Marcus slowly lifted his head, his voice raspy and exhausted. "Is there anyone else? Anyone we know?"

Arthur opened the ledger to a marked page filled with neat, handwritten columns of numbers and initials. He pointed to a specific entry dated four days before the wedding.

"Look at this line item," Arthur said quietly. "A transfer of two hundred thousand dollars, routed through a shell company called Horizon Holdings, deposited directly into a personal account in the Cayman Islands."

Maya stepped closer, peering over Arthur’s shoulder. She read the name associated with the receiving account, and her breath caught in her throat. The name was not a Vance. It was someone she knew intimately—someone who had helped her choose her wedding dress, held her bouquet, and stood beside her at the altar as her maid of honor.

"Chloe?" Maya whispered, stepping back as if she had been physically struck. "No. That's impossible. Chloe didn't even know the Vances until I introduced them last year."

Marcus closed his eyes tightly, rubbing his temples as a wave of dizziness hit him. "Maya... Chloe was hired by my mother's firm three years ago as a corporate consultant. She's the one who introduced us at the art gallery in Chicago."

The silence in the office became deafening. Maya dropped her coffee cup, the ceramic shattering against the hardwood floor, spilling dark liquid across the rug like a spreading stain.
