Chapter 5 - The Frozen Empire

The declaration echoed against the vaulted arches, striking the wedding guests with the force of a physical blow. Several prominent businessmen in the third row—men who had shaken hands with Evelyn and invested millions in her ventures—exchanged panicked glances. Whispers erupted into a frantic wave of overlapping voices as the realization of financial ruin rippled through the pews.

Evelyn lunged forward, her hand raised to strike Maya across the face, but Arthur Vance stepped between them with practiced ease, catching Evelyn’s wrist in a firm, unyielding grip.

"I wouldn't do that, Mrs. Vance," Arthur warned coldly, letting go of her arm as if it were contaminated. "Assaulting a witness will only add criminal charges to the civil indictments we are filing first thing tomorrow morning."

Marcus stood frozen in the center aisle, his tuxedo feeling suddenly like a straitjacket. He looked at his mother, then at Arthur, and finally back at Maya, who stood tall and unyielding in her sparkling tiara and ruined white gown.

"Maya... all our assets?" Marcus asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "The apartment, the cars, my accounts... everything is gone?"

"Everything," Maya confirmed without a trace of hesitation. "Your mother spent the last twenty years moving stolen capital through offshore shell accounts to maintain an illusion of wealth. I didn't steal anything from you, Marcus. I simply reclaimed what was rightfully mine before she could transfer it out of the country."

Evelyn let out a sharp, hysterical laugh, clutching her emerald dress as she glared at Maya with pure malice. "You think you’ve won, don't you? You think a few pieces of paper and a frozen bank account will destroy what generations of Vances built? We have connections, girl. Judges, politicians, men who owe my family favors that date back decades before your father was even born."

"Those connections won't help you when the federal tax evasion audits hit tomorrow," a new voice rang out from the back of the church.

Everyone turned. Standing near the massive oak doors was a man in a dark federal agent's windbreaker, flanked by two uniformed police officers. He held up a sealed federal warrant, his badge glinting sharply in the afternoon light.

"Evelyn Vance," the federal agent announced clearly, stepping down the center aisle. "You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and interstate financial laundering."

May you like

Marcus staggered backward, his legs giving out as he collapsed heavily into the nearest wooden pew, his head in his hands as the reality of his mother's empire crashing down around him became complete.
