Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Within

Maya stared at the broken ceramic pieces, her mind racing backward through years of shared secrets, late-night phone calls, and comforting hugs. Chloe had been her rock, her confidante, the person who had encouraged her to marry Marcus when doubts had occasionally crept into her mind.
"She wasn't just a friend," Maya whispered, her voice trembling with a sudden, overwhelming fury. "She was their plant. She engineered our entire relationship from day one, making sure I fell in love with Marcus so the merger of our families—and our assets—would be legally bulletproof."
Marcus stood up slowly, his legs feeling like lead. He walked over to the desk, staring down at the wire transfer confirmation with Chloe's signature scrawled neatly at the bottom. The rage that had been dormant inside him finally ignited, burning hot and fierce through his veins.
"Where is she?" Marcus demanded, looking directly at Arthur. "Where is Chloe right now?"
Arthur checked his watch, sliding a printed tracking report across the desk. "According to our digital footprint analysis, her phone pinged forty minutes ago near the private aviation terminal at O'Hare. She’s booked on a private charter to Zurich."
Maya didn't waste a single second. She turned toward the office door, grabbing her coat from the brass rack by the entrance.
"We're going to O'Hare," Maya said, her tone absolute and freezing.
Marcus grabbed his jacket, following her out into the hallway without a moment's hesitation. "She’s not getting away with this. Not after what she did to both of us."
As they hurried down the corridor toward the elevators, Arthur called out after them, waving a printed subpoena. "Wait! Take federal authorization papers with you. If she boards that plane without being intercepted, those assets are gone forever!"
They burst out of the office building into the pouring rain, diving into Marcus's black sedan as the tires shrieked against the wet asphalt. The city blur of Chicago rushed past them in streaks of neon and gray as Marcus slammed his foot on the accelerator, racing against time to catch the woman who had sold their lives for a two-hundred-thousand-dollar payday.

The rain hammered furiously against the windshield as they sped toward the airport, neither of them speaking, both trapped in the terrifying realization that every single pillar of their shared life was nothing more than an elaborate cage built by thieves.
