Chapter 14 - The Final Secret

Maya picked up her phone, her eyes scanning Arthur’s text message twice before the words fully registered in her mind.

“Just unlocked Evelyn's personal home safe. Found a sealed adoption file dated twenty-six years ago. You need to read it immediately. It changes everything about who Marcus really is.”

Maya stared at the screen, her heart skipping a beat. She looked slowly across the dark car interior at Marcus, who was watching her with a tired, questioning expression.

"What is it?" Marcus asked, leaning closer. "Did Arthur find something else?"

"He found a safe in your mother's suburban home," Maya said slowly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the garage ventilation fans. "A sealed adoption file from twenty-six years ago."

Marcus frowned, shaking his head. "An adoption file? That's impossible. My mother always talked about my birth in Chicago, the hospital records, the baby pictures..."

"Arthur says the hospital records were forged," Maya interrupted, holding up the phone to show him the photographic attachment Arthur had just sent. "Marcus... look at the biological mother's name listed on this intake form."

Marcus leaned forward, squinting at the glowing screen as the image loaded. The name written in faded blue ink at the top of the twenty-six-year-old document was obscured by water damage, but the signature at the bottom was crystal clear.

It was the signature of Arthur Vance's own late sister—and the maiden name matched the original owners of the Sterling estate.

Marcus dropped his hands, staring straight ahead into the darkness of the garage as the final, unimaginable truth slammed into him with the force of a tidal wave.

"I'm not a Vance," Marcus whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "I'm a Sterling."

Maya nodded slowly, tears welling in her eyes as the agonizing puzzle pieces finally clicked into place. Evelyn hadn't just destroyed her father's company; after driving him to his grave, Evelyn and David had kidnapped his infant son—Maya's own older brother—and raised him under the Vance name as a golden trophy to ensure the stolen estate could never be legally reclaimed.

"They didn't just give you to me as a consolation prize, Marcus," Maya whispered, her voice breaking as she touched his cheek. "They gave you to me because you were my brother all along."
