Chapter 12 - Cornered in the Cabin

Marcus bounded up the metal stairs three at a time, slamming his hand against the cabin door to block Chloe from retreating inside. The wind whipped rain into their faces as they stood face-to-face on the narrow aluminum platform.

Chloe backed away, her hands trembling as she clutched her leather handbag to her chest. Her mascara had run down her cheeks in dark streaks, completely shattering the polished, composed image she always maintained.

"Marcus... Maya... please," Chloe stammered, her voice shaking violently as she looked between them. "You don't understand. I was forced into this. Evelyn threatened my family—she said if I didn't help them orchestrate the merger, my brother would go to prison for embezzlement!"

Maya climbed the stairs behind Marcus, stepping into the cabin doorway with an expression carved from absolute ice. She didn't raise her voice, but every word cut through the roar of the dying jet engines like a razor blade.

"Your brother doesn't even work in finance, Chloe," Maya said coldly. "He's a marine biologist living in San Diego. Evelyn didn't threaten you. She simply offered you a price tag, and you gladly sold our lives to the highest bidder."

Chloe’s breath hitched, her false bravado completely evaporating. She dropped her bag onto the leather cabin seat, her knees buckling as she slid down into a sitting position on the steps of the plane.

"I needed the money, Maya," Chloe sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "My debts... the medical bills for my mother's treatment... Evelyn offered to clear everything in exchange for keeping tabs on you and making sure you stayed with Marcus until the estate transfer was complete."

Marcus stood in the doorway, staring down at the woman he had considered a trusted family friend for years. The betrayal didn't sting as sharply as his mother's or his uncle's, but it added a final, crushing weight to the ruins of his past.

"You sat at our dinner table," Marcus said, his voice dangerously low. "You helped us pick out our home. You smiled in our faces every single day while picking our pockets."

Before Chloe could reply, two airport police officers rushed up the stairs, placing heavy plastic zip-ties around her wrists and lifting her to her feet.

"Chloe Vance... excuse me, Chloe Henderson," one of the officers stated firmly, reading her rights as they escorted her down the metal stairs toward the waiting patrol car. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, and aiding corporate embezzlement."
