Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Pews

The heavy oak doors of the cathedral seemed to press inward as the collective gasp of the guests subsided into an electric whisper. Evelyn stood up from the front row, her tailored emerald dress rustling sharply in the dead silence. Her hands trembled so violently she had to grip the mahogany pew in front of her just to remain upright.

"Maya, darling, this is a terrible misunderstanding," Evelyn stammered, her voice thin and brittle, lacking its usual commanding authority. "Whatever you think you’ve heard, it’s a malicious lie. Please, let’s go into the vestry and discuss this privately like family."

Maya slowly lifted the hem of her heavy lace gown, stepping back away from Marcus as if his very presence might contaminate her. She refused to look at the man she had planned to spend the rest of her life with, keeping her watery gaze locked entirely on her future mother-in-law.

"Private?" Maya's voice cut through the cavernous hall like shattered glass. "You spent three years preaching about honesty, family legacy, and trust, Evelyn. You welcomed me into your home, hugged me when my father passed away, and whispered advice about building a future. All the while, you were hiding the exact document that proves you destroyed my family twenty years ago."

Marcus grabbed Maya’s wrist, his grip firm but pleading. "Maya, look at me! What is she talking about? My mother didn't even know your family back then. We met in Chicago three years ago. It was a coincidence!"

"Let go of me, Marcus," Maya whispered, her tone dropping into a dangerous, icy register that made him flinch. "Nothing between us was a coincidence. Your mother engineered every single moment of our relationship."

Evelyn finally found her voice, stepping into the center aisle with a desperate flush rising up her neck. "Stop this right now, Maya! You are having a breakdown. The stress of the wedding has caused some sort of fugue state. Marcus, get her away from the altar before you let her humiliate our entire family any further."

Marcus looked frantically between the two women, his heart hammering against his ribs. He turned to Father Thomas for help, but the priest stood frozen, still holding the microphone.

"Mother," Marcus said, his voice cracking with a sudden, terrifying realization. "Tell me right now. What document is she talking about?"

Evelyn opened her mouth to speak, but before a single word could escape, the heavy side doors of the cathedral flew open with a deafening bang.
