Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vow

The vaulted ceiling of St. Jude’s Cathedral echoed with a suffocating silence. Sunlight poured through towering stained-glass windows, casting vibrant shades of sapphire and amber over the meticulously decorated pews. At the altar, Father Thomas adjusted his glasses, his fingers lightly gripping the leather-bound prayer book and the wireless microphone. He looked toward the bride, her heavily beaded white lace wedding gown shimmering under the chandeliers, and completed the sacred inquiry with a calm, practiced cadence.
"Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"
Beside her, Marcus stood tall in his classic black tuxedo, his neatly trimmed beard catching the light, a white boutonnière pinned sharply to his lapel. He smiled gently, his hand securely holding hers.
Maya looked directly into his eyes. Her expression was entirely devoid of warmth, carved from stone and absolute certainty. The seconds stretched, heavy and unnatural, before she parted her lips and firmly replied.
"No."
A sharp intake of breath swept through the congregation like a sudden winter wind. Marcus blinked, his smile instantly fracturing into disbelief. He glanced around, expecting a joke, a nervous stutter, anything to reestablish reality.
"Baby, what are you saying?" Marcus asked, his hands moving in a confused, defensive gesture. "Why are you refusing to marry me?"
Maya felt a hot tear slip down her immaculate makeup, her voice trembling slightly as she looked past him.
"Because I finally found out the truth."
"What truth?" Marcus demanded, his voice rising just enough to echo against the stone pillars.
"Ask your mother."
Maya turned her gaze toward the front row. There, seated directly behind the groom's family, sat Evelyn, Marcus’s mother. The older woman’s face had drained completely of color. Her hand flew to her mouth, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as she realized her carefully guarded secret had just imploded in front of three hundred witnesses.

Marcus slowly turned his head to look at his mother, the blood draining from his own face as he demanded an immediate explanation.
