Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The sheer weight of the confession hung over the cathedral, suffocating and irreversible. Marcus stumbled backward, his polished leather shoes slipping slightly on the marble floor as his carefully constructed world dissolved into ash. He looked at Maya, his hands opening and closing uselessly at his sides, desperate for some loophole, some shred of denial that could piece his reality back together.
"Maya... please," Marcus choked out, his voice cracking under the emotional strain. "I didn't know. I swear to God, I had no idea about any of this. I love you. Everything we built—the house, the company, our life together—that was real to me. Please tell me you believe that."
Maya looked at the man she had loved for three years, searching his face for any sign of deception. She saw only genuine agony, a deep, bleeding wound that matched her own. But sympathy could not erase history, and love could not survive on foundations built from stolen bones.
"I know you didn't know, Marcus," Maya said, her voice softening just a fraction, though her eyes remained cold. "If I thought you were part of this conspiracy, you wouldn't just be standing here humiliated at the altar. We would be in a courtroom, not a church."
Evelyn finally regained enough composure to sit up straight, her survival instinct overriding her shock. She glared at Arthur Vance with venomous hatred before turning her sights on Maya.
"You arrogant little ungrateful brat," Evelyn hissed, her mask of grace completely disintegrating. "I took you in when you were living in a studio apartment working a dead-end job. I funded your boutique, I introduced you to high society, I made you a woman of status! I didn't ruin your father; he ruined himself through sheer incompetence. My family simply picked up the pieces of his pathetic empire!"
The bridesmaids gasped in horror, stepping back from the front row as Evelyn’s true nature tore through the holy sanctuary.
"You stole our legacy," Maya replied steadily, stepping down from the altar platform to stand face-to-face with the older woman. "And you thought you could buy my silence by tying me to your son. But you made one fatal mistake, Evelyn."
"And what was that?" Evelyn sneered, standing up to tower over Maya despite her trembling limbs.
"You underestimated the daughter of the man you destroyed," Maya said, turning her wrist to reveal a small, subtle diamond bracelet. "I didn't just find Arthur's files today. I audited your primary corporate holding accounts this morning."
Marcus stepped between them, his eyes wide with alarm. "Maya, what are you talking about? What accounts?"
May you like
Maya met Marcus's desperate gaze and delivered the final blow. "Your family's entire fortune, Marcus? It doesn't belong to your mother. It belongs to the Sterling estate. And as of this morning, I’ve frozen every single asset you own."
