Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Witness

A tall, weathered man in a charcoal suit strode down the side aisle, stepping purposefully past the stunned bridesmaids in their glittering gold satin dresses. He carried a bulky leather briefcase, his expression stern and resolute. The murmurs of the crowd spiked again, turning into a chaotic wave of speculation as security guards instinctively shifted toward the center aisle.
"Don't touch him," Maya commanded, raising her hand to stop the ushers. "He is the only reason any of us know the truth today."
Marcus stepped defensively in front of his mother, his eyes narrowing at the stranger. "Who the hell are you, and what are you doing here? This is a private ceremony. Get out!"
The man ignored Marcus entirely, stopping just ten feet from the altar. He popped the latches of his briefcase, pulled out a thick manila folder filled with yellowed paper and official legal seals, and looked directly at Evelyn.
"Good afternoon, Evelyn," the man said, his voice deep and gravelly. "I’m Arthur Vance. It’s been twenty-two years since you paid my firm to bury the bankruptcy filings and the asset transfer titles of the Sterling estate."
Evelyn’s knees buckled slightly, and she collapsed back into her pew, clutching her chest as if she had been physically struck. "Arthur... you swore an oath. You destroyed those files."
"I kept a copy," Arthur replied smoothly, pulling out a specific document and holding it up for the entire church to see. "Insurance. And today, it’s time to cash it in."
Maya stepped forward, her veil trailing behind her like a shroud of sorrow. "My father didn't die of a sudden heart attack, Marcus. Your mother drove him to bankruptcy, seized his company through shell corporations, and locked him out of his own life two weeks before he suffered that fatal stroke. She robbed me of everything, and then she handed you to me as a twisted consolation prize."
The silence that followed was absolute. Marcus stared at the paper in Arthur’s hand, then slowly turned his head to look down at his mother, whose tear-streaked face confirmed every single word.
"Mother... is this true?" Marcus whispered, his voice completely hollow.
May you like
Evelyn closed her eyes, tears spilling over her mascara as she nodded almost imperceptibly.
