CHAPTER 9: The International Invitation

Six months after the surgery, Lily walked into the Juilliard School of Music in New York on her own two feet, holding Julian’s hand without the aid of crutches. The prestigious Avery Fisher Discovery Competition had invited fifty of the world’s most promising young pianists to compete in an international showcase at Carnegie Hall.
Lily had been selected as a wildcard entrant after an anonymous recording of her playing *“Clara’s Lullaby”* went viral online.
“Are you nervous?” Julian asked as they stood backstage during the preliminary auditions.
Lily looked up at the towering ceiling, her eyes bright with excitement rather than fear. “Mom told me that stage fright is just your heart beating to the rhythm of the song. You just have to let the song take over.”
Julian chuckled softly, realizing once again how much of Clara lived within her. “You don't have to win anything, Lily. Just tell your story through the keys.”

When Lily took the stage, her small frame looked almost comical against the massive nine-foot Steinway concert grand. But the moment her fingers touched the keyboard, the auditorium fell into a stunned silence. She didn't just play the notes; she made the instrument weep, sing, and triumph. By the time she finished her performance, the entire panel of world-renowned judges stood up in a unanimous standing ovation.
