CHAPTER 14: The Dawn of Justice
The morning after the concert, Carnegie Hall announced Lily Vance as the youngest Grand Prix winner in the competition's seventy-year history. But that wasn't the only headline dominating the morning news cycle.
At 9:00 AM, the District Attorney held a televised press conference announcing the formal indictment of Arthur Vance for corporate embezzlement, fraudulent administration of charitable trusts, and criminal negligence. The evidence was overwhelming, backed by the sealed medical documents Julian had bravely turned over to the authorities.
Arthur did not fight the charges. Stripped of his titles and facing the ruin of his public reputation, he entered a guilty plea, agreeing to surrender his entire personal fortune to a newly formed non-profit foundation dedicated to funding specialized surgeries for disabled foster children.
Julian met with Arthur one last time in the courthouse holding room before sentencing.
“Why didn't you let me go to jail in silence?” Arthur asked, his voice broken and hollow.
“Because silence is what let you hurt people for forty years,” Julian said softly. “You tried to steal Lily’s voice, and you tried to erase Clara. Today, their music gave twenty thousand children a chance to walk again.”
