CHAPTER 4: The Sound of Sunlight

Despite the looming storm with Arthur, Julian dedicated every daylight hour to Lily. He had the estate’s east wing renovated within forty-eight hours, replacing steps with custom oak ramps and lowering the piano bench in the sunroom so she could transfer herself effortlessly.

For the first few days, Lily spoke very little. She observed the grand house with a quiet wariness, accustomed to the rigid schedules and cold corridors of the state foster system. But whenever Julian opened the lid of the Steinway in the sunroom, her entire posture transformed.

“Do you know how to read sheet music, Lily?” Julian asked one afternoon, placing a basic Mozart sonata on the stand.

Lily shook her head. “Mom couldn't afford books. She just hummed, and I found the notes. She said music lives in your bones, not on paper.”

Julian smiled, a genuine warmth reaching his eyes for the first time in nearly a decade. “Show me what else lives in your bones.”

Lily placed her fingers on the keys. Instead of mimicking standard pieces, she began to weave an entirely original melody—a blend of melancholy and soaring optimism that captured the sound of rain hitting windowpanes. Her technique was raw and untrained, yet her phrasing possessed the intuitive genius of a master. Julian watched her hands dance, realizing with sudden clarity that Clara hadn't just given him a daughter; she had returned his lost inspiration.
