CHAPTER 8: The Shadow of Sabotage
As Lily’s physical strength returned, Arthur’s desperation mounted. Knowing that criminal charges would destroy the Vance empire, the patriarch launched a full-scale legal assault, filing an emergency petition to invalidate Julian’s paternity and claim legal custody of Lily on grounds of parental instability.
One rainy afternoon, Julian returned from physical therapy to find two court officers and a social worker standing in his foyer.
“Mr. Vance, we have an injunction from the family court,” the social worker stated nervously. “Due to allegations of past substance abuse during your touring years and current financial freezing, we are required to conduct an immediate fitness evaluation of the home.”
Julian stood tall, holding Lily’s hand as she balanced steadily on her new pediatric crutches. “My home is open. My life is clean. Check every room, run every drug test you want. But look at this child. Does she look neglected to you?”
The social worker looked down at Lily. The girl was radiant, her cheeks flushed with healthy color, wearing a warm knitted sweater and smiling brightly.
“I want to show you something,” Lily said to the social worker, letting go of Julian’s hand.
With slow, deliberate determination, Lily took four independent steps across the marble floor without her crutches, sitting down gracefully on the piano bench. She began to play Bach’s *Prelude in C Major* with flawless precision and deep emotional maturity.
