CHAPTER 5: The Medical Mystery
A week into her new life, Julian took Lily to Dr. Michael Chen, a renowned neurologist and Julian’s childhood friend. While Lily underwent a series of comprehensive MRIs and nerve conduction tests, Julian waited in the private office, pacing like a caged animal.
When Dr. Chen finally walked in, his expression was a mix of bewilderment and caution. He clipped the digital scans onto the light board.
“Julian, I reviewed the records from the state facility,” Dr. Chen began, pulling off his spectacles. “They diagnosed her with congenital paraplegia. But looking at these new high-resolution scans, that diagnosis makes no sense.”
Julian froze. “What are you saying, Michael?”
“There is no spinal cord severing, and no degenerative nerve disease,” Chen explained, pointing to a small shadow near the base of the thoracic vertebrae. “There is an old, encapsulated benign cyst pressing against the spinal canal, likely formed after a childhood fall that was never properly treated. It created an ischemic block, numbing her lower limbs.”
“Can it be treated?” Julian asked, his voice trembling with hope.
“With modern microsurgery, yes. There is an eighty percent chance she could regain motor function and walk again,” Chen replied. “However, the state facility never authorized the MRI. In fact, her records show an explicit refusal for advanced diagnostic funding—signed off by a foundation trustee.”
