Chapter 9 - Sirens and Shadows

The blinding glare of a dozen police headlights illuminated the estate gates like a Hollywood movie set. Uniformed officers poured from their cruisers, their weapons drawn and tactical boots crunching rapidly across the gravel driveway.

“Police! Drop your weapon! Hands where we can see them!” shouted the lead detective, a weathered woman with sharp eyes and a silver badge pinned to her tactical vest, stepping forward as she leveled her service weapon at the struggling figures in the hedge.

Elena rolled off Victoria, pinning the shrieking woman’s arms behind her back with a pair of heavy-duty zip-ties she had retrieved from her tactical belt. Victoria thrashed wildly, her expensive silver dress tearing against the thorny rosebushes as she spat curses into the dirt.

“Get these cuffs off me! You don’t know who my husband is! You’re all going to lose your jobs!” Victoria screeched, her face smeared with mud and makeup running in black streaks down her cheeks.

Detective Miller stepped closer, ignoring Victoria’s desperate threats, and looked down at Elena, who calmly flashed a federal badge from beneath her torn maid’s uniform.

“Special Agent Vance, Federal Cyber Security Division,” Elena stated clearly, her voice steady despite the bruises blooming across her cheekbone. “We have an active scene inside the main villa. Julian Vance is barricaded in the master study with a suppressed firearm and the primary mainframe servers containing the stolen intellectual property.”

Detective Miller nodded sharply, gesturing for two tactical officers to secure Victoria and haul her toward a cruiser. “Good work, Agent Vance. We’ve had eyes on this corporate espionage ring for months, but we couldn't get a warrant without the internal access keys.” She turned her attention to Richard, who was standing a few feet away holding Maya protectively against his side. “Mr. Hawthorne? I’m Detective Miller. I’m sorry it took us this long to breach the geofence, but your smart-home router was encrypted with military-grade firewalls.”

“Julian designed the network infrastructure himself,” Richard said, his voice hollow as he looked back toward the dark silhouette of his mansion looming against the foggy sky. “He planned this for over a year.”

“He won’t be planning anything else tonight,” Detective Miller replied grimly, signaling the tactical team to form up at the front entrance of the villa. “Agent Vance, can you lead the breach team through the service corridors? We need to secure the hardware before he initiates a remote wipe.”

Elena stood up, rolling her bruised shoulders and checking the clip of a sidearm she had secured from the unconscious guard in the garage. She looked at Richard, her expression softening just a fraction.

“Stay here with your daughter, Mr. Hawthorne,” Elena said quietly. “I’ll finish what I started.”
