Chapter 5 - The Weaponized Token

The metallic click of the pistol’s hammer being cocked sounded like a sledgehammer blow inside the quiet foyer. Richard threw his arm protectively around Maya, shoving his daughter behind the thick concrete pillar of the indoor garden while stepping into the line of fire.

“Don't you dare touch my daughter, Julian!” Richard yelled, his voice echoing with a fierce, protective paternal rage that eclipsed his corporate ruin. “Shoot me if you want, but let the girl and Elena walk out of here.”

Julian tilted his head, a cold smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “Oh, Richard, you always were the tragic hero. But nobody is walking anywhere until I get that hardware token.” He gestured with the pistol toward Richard’s breast pocket. “Take it out. Slowly. Two fingers. Drop it on the floor right between your feet.”

Victoria pushed herself away from the wall, her composure entirely restored now that she had armed muscle backing her up. She walked down the remaining steps, stopping beside Julian and glaring at Richard with venomous contempt.

“Give it to him, Richard,” Victoria spat, her voice dripping with malice. “You think you’re so smart with your algorithms and your board meetings, but you never paid attention to what was right in front of you. I spent three years playing the doting trophy wife while you ignored me for your servers. I earned every penny of this empire.”

Elena didn’t wait for Richard to reach into his pocket. Utilizing the distraction of Victoria’s rant, she dropped into a low combat crouch, swept her right leg across the slick marble floor, and kicked the base of the nearest interior planter. A heavy earthenware pot shattered against the floor tiles, sending a cloud of dark potting soil and ceramic shards flying directly into Julian’s face.

Julian swore, stumbling backward as the dirt hit his eyes and momentarily ruined his aim. The suppressed pistol discharged into the ceiling, blowing a massive hole in the drywall and raining plaster dust down over the minimalist furniture.

“Now, Richard! Run!” Elena shouted, drawing the ceramic blade from her boot in a single, fluid motion and launching herself up the stairs toward Julian before he could recover his sight.

Richard didn’t hesitate. He grabbed Maya’s hand and bolted toward the heavy reinforced service door leading to the subterranean garage, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Julian wiped the dirt from his eyes, howling with fury as Elena reached the landing and drove the heel of her palm into his wrist, sending the pistol clattering across the glass steps.

“You bitch!” Julian roared, lunging forward and grabbing Elena by the throat, slamming her body against the glass banister with a sickening crunch that threatened to shatter the railing completely, just as the heavy garage door slammed shut behind fleeing father and daughter.
