Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Shadows

The figure stepped out of the stairwell darkness into the flickering garage light. It wasn’t Julian, and it wasn’t Victoria. It was Marcus, the estate’s head of private security, a hulking ex-marine whose loyalty Richard had assumed was absolute. Marcus gripped a heavy steel crowbar in his right hand, his face set in a grim, expressionless mask.
“Mr. Hawthorne,” Marcus said, his voice flat and devoid of any warmth. “Mr. Vance said you’d be down here trying to use the manual override. He asked me to make sure you didn’t damage company property.”
Richard didn’t stop typing on the rugged laptop. His fingers flew across the mechanical keys, inputting the final string of cryptographic commands required to trip the mechanical release on the main garage door. “How much did he pay you, Marcus? Whatever it is, I’ll double it. Five million. Ten million. Name your price.”
Marcus took a slow, deliberate step toward the SUV, the heavy iron crowbar dragging along the concrete floor with a harsh, grating screech. “It’s not about the money, Mr. Hawthorne. Some people just prefer working for a winner who knows how to take control, rather than a visionary who hides behind his screens while his empire crumbles.”
Maya whimpered in the back seat, curling herself into a tight ball on the leather floorboards. “Dad, hurry! He’s getting closer!”
Richard hit the enter key with the palm of his hand. Across the garage, a loud pneumatic hiss echoed through the space as the heavy mechanical locks on the main exit gate disengaged, and the massive steel shutter began to roll upward, letting in a cool blast of night air and the distant, flashing red-and-blue lights of a distant police cruiser moving down the coastal highway.
Marcus lunged forward, raising the iron pipe to smash the driver’s side window of the SUV.
Before the metal could strike the glass, a shadow dropped silently from the ceiling pipes directly onto Marcus’s shoulders. It was Elena. Her black-and-white uniform was stained with dust and blood, but her grip was lethal. She locked her legs around the security guard’s neck, using his own momentum to flip the massive man backward onto the hard concrete floor with a deafening thud.
Marcus groaned, his eyes rolling back as he lost consciousness. Elena stood up, wiping a streak of blood from her forehead, and jerked her head toward the open exit.
“Go! Now!” Elena yelled over the roar of the rising garage gate.

Richard didn’t hesitate. He slammed his foot down on the accelerator, roaring past the unconscious guard and out into the freedom of the night, unaware that Victoria was already waiting for them at the end of the driveway with a loaded weapon.
