Chapter 6 - Subterranean Escape

The air in the subterranean parking garage was cool and smelled faintly of exhaust fumes and damp concrete. Emergency backup lighting cast long, flickering shadows across the fleet of luxury vehicles parked neatly in their assigned stalls. Richard shoved Maya into the back seat of his matte-black SUV, his hands shaking so violently he dropped the smart-key twice before it finally clicked into the ignition slot with a reassuring beep.
“Dad, are you bleeding?” Maya asked, her voice trembling as she pressed her face against the tinted window, watching the reinforced steel door that led back up to the villa.
“I’m fine, sweetheart. Keep your head down and don't look back,” Richard commanded, throwing the transmission into reverse and spinning the steering wheel hard to clear the concrete pillar.
The garage doors were automated, tied to the same smart-home network that Julian had locked down from upstairs. Richard slammed his palm against the dashboard control panel, pressing the master override switch for the heavy steel roll-up gate that led out to the private driveway.
On the dashboard screen, a flashing red warning light appeared: ACCESS DENIED. SYSTEM OVERRIDDEN BY ADMIN TERMINAL 02.
“Damn it!” Richard slammed his fist against the steering wheel, the sharp horn blast echoing off the concrete walls. Julian had locked the physical egress points from the master control console in his private study upstairs.
Maya reached into her backpack, her small fingers rummaging frantically among her school books before pulling out a small, metallic flash drive with a glowing blue LED tip. “Dad... look. When you gave me your briefcase this morning to carry to the car, I found this loose in the side pocket. You said it was the cold storage backup for the company's master node.”
Richard stared at the flash drive in his daughter’s palm, his eyes widening in sudden realization. It wasn't just a backup; it was the physical genesis key—the offline cryptographic anchor that allowed him to override any remote administrative lock in the entire corporate infrastructure, provided it was plugged into a hardwired terminal.
“Maya, you’re a genius,” Richard breathed, leaning over the center console to open the glove compartment. He pulled out an old, ruggedized diagnostic laptop—a relic from his early programming days that had no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth capabilities, making it completely invisible to Julian’s network intrusion tools.
He flipped open the rugged laptop, jammed the flash drive into the USB port, and began hammering out a complex sequence of command-line instructions. On the garage wall opposite them, a small maintenance door—the manual override crank for the main security gate—stood tucked behind a utility panel.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door connecting the garage to the villa interior clicked loudly. The electronic lock disengaged, and the heavy door began to slowly swing inward, revealing the silhouette of a figure descending the concrete stairs with a heavy iron pipe in hand.
