Chapter 2 - The Digital Witness

Richard snatched the smartphone from his twelve-year-old daughter’s small hands, his calloused fingers grazing the warm glass. On the screen, a high-definition video loop played out with agonizing clarity. The digital lens had captured the entire sequence from the upper gallery angle, framing not just the stroller and the broken glass, but the exact micro-expressions of everyone involved. Victoria’s silver dress flashed in the frame as she deliberately kicked the rear wheel of the stroller just as Elena reached for the handle, sending the vehicle plunging backward toward the steps before Victoria threw her hands up to scream.
Richard’s breath hitched in his throat. The fury that had driven him to tower over Elena evaporated, replaced by a cold, hollow dread that pooled in his stomach. He replayed the three-second clip twice, his eyes widening in mounting horror as the undeniable truth sank into his consciousness.
“Where did you get this, Maya?” Richard whispered, his voice losing all its prior thunder, dropping to a raspy, disbelieving murmur.
“I was recording a dance trend for my social media in the upstairs hallway,” Maya answered, her voice trembling as she shrank back slightly from her father’s intense gaze. “I didn’t want to post it because the background looked messy, but when I played it back just now... I saw what Victoria did. She pushed the stroller herself, Dad. She framed Elena.”
Victoria stopped halfway down the staircase, her silver dress catching the light as her composure finally began to fracture. The theatrical panic returned, but this time it lacked an audience of believers. She forced a breathless, brittle laugh, her fingers clutching the glass banister until her knuckles turned white.
“Maya is just a child, Richard. Kids edit things nowadays with those artificial intelligence apps,” Victoria stammered, her voice pitching an octave higher than normal. “She’s trying to protect the help because she’s sensitive. You can’t seriously believe a smartphone video over your own wife?”
Elena slowly pulled herself up to her knees, wincing as a sharp twinge shot through her left wrist. She didn’t speak; she simply watched Richard, her eyes searching his face for the justice she had almost been denied.
Richard slowly turned his head to look at his wife. The man who managed a billion-dollar tech portfolio with ruthless efficiency suddenly looked like a stranger trapped inside his own home. He stepped away from Elena, putting physical distance between himself and the lie he had lived in for three years.
“Victoria,” Richard said quietly, stepping toward the base of the stairs. “The cloud backup on Maya’s phone uploads automatically to our home server the second it connects to the Wi-Fi. I can pull the raw, unedited metadata right now from my tablet.”
Victoria’s breath caught, her eyes darting frantically toward the front door before locking onto Richard’s chillingly calm expression.
“You wouldn’t dare humiliate me in front of the staff,” Victoria hissed, abandoning all pretense of innocence as her true venom surfaced.

“Watch me,” Richard replied, tapping his watch to initiate a remote diagnostic scan of the villa’s network, only to watch the entire household power grid instantly shut down into total darkness.
