Chapter 4 - The Intruder Above

The emergency generator kicked in with a low, mechanical thrum, flooding the villa with harsh white light. Standing on the upper glass landing, perfectly framed by the modernist architecture, was a man in a tailored charcoal suit. In his right hand, he held a sleek, matte-black pistol fitted with a sound suppressor, the barrel pointed casually toward the floor. It was Julian Vance, Richard’s trusted chief operating officer and corporate second-in-command.
Victoria slumped against the wall, her feigned terror instantly transforming into absolute, shivering relief. “Julian... thank god. You’re early.”
Richard froze, the blood draining from his face as the ultimate betrayal revealed its architecture. He looked from his wife to his lifelong business partner, the man who had stood beside him at his wedding, the man who had helped him build Hawthorne Technologies from a garage startup into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise.
“Victoria? Julian?” Richard’s voice cracked, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical wound. “What is the meaning of this? Are you out of your minds?”
Julian descended the glass staircase with unhurried arrogance, his polished leather shoes clicking softly against the transparent treads. He didn’t look at Richard; his eyes were fixed entirely on Elena, who had raised her tactical flashlight to blind the approaching gunman while keeping her body positioned defensively in front of Maya.
“I told you she wasn’t just a maid, Victoria,” Julian said smoothly, his voice devoid of emotion as he stopped three steps from the bottom. “You should have let me vet the domestic staff personally instead of hiring through standard channels.”
“You knew?” Richard stepped forward, his fists clenched so hard his fingernails broke the skin of his palms. “You’ve been sleeping with my wife? You’ve been draining the company accounts?”
Julian chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the minimalist walls. “Richard, you were a brilliant software engineer, but you were a terrible businessman. You built a fortress of code, but you left the front door wide open for someone with actual ambition to walk right in. Victoria and I didn’t just drain the accounts; we transferred the entire intellectual property portfolio of Hawthorne Tech to an offshore holding company this morning. By sunrise, your company legally ceases to exist.”
Maya let out a muffled sob, burying her face in Richard’s side. “Dad, make them stop. I want to go home.”
Elena kept her body steady, calculating the distance between herself and Julian’s firearm. Her hand drifted slowly toward her left boot, where a heavy-duty ceramic blade was sheathed against her calf. “You’re too late, Julian. The data transfer protocol requires a multi-sig authorization key that Richard holds on his personal hardware token. A token that he didn't sign off on today.”

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing as he raised the barrel of the pistol directly toward Elena’s chest. “You’re very thorough, Agent Vance. Too bad you won’t live to collect your bonus.”
