Chapter 13 - The Legal Trap

The black luxury town car rolled slowly up the curved driveway, crunching over the scattered debris from the previous night’s chaos before coming to a smooth halt near the front entrance. The rear door swung open, and Arthur Sterling stepped out. He was an impeccably dressed corporate attorney in a charcoal three-piece suit, his silver hair neatly combed, carrying a sleek leather briefcase that looked like it held a guillotine disguised as paperwork.
Richard stood at the top of the front steps, his hands clenched into fists at his sides, flanked by Elena, who kept her hand resting casually near her sidearm.
“Arthur,” Richard said, his voice cold and steady as the lawyer approached the steps with an infuriatingly polite smile. “You’re up early for a Saturday morning. Did Victoria call you from the holding cell before her one phone call expired?”
Sterling stopped at the base of the stairs, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he looked up at the billionaire with patronizing sympathy. “Good morning, Richard. This is a tragic business, truly tragic. But corporate governance doesn't pause for domestic drama. As legal counsel for the Hawthorne-Vance Trust, I’ve been instructed by the primary stakeholders to execute an immediate emergency receivership transfer of all subsidiary assets, including the pediatric neural-prosthetic patents.”
Sterling reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of embossed legal documents, and held them out like an offering to an executioner.
“You have no legal standing to execute that transfer, Arthur,” Richard stepped forward, his voice ringing with authority. “Julian is behind bars for corporate espionage and attempted murder. Any proxy agreements he signed are null and void under federal RICO statutes.”
Sterling didn’t blink. He smiled, a thin, patronizing curve of the lips. “Under standard criminal law, perhaps. But the trust documents filed three years ago contain a special contingency clause signed by your wife and co-trustee, Victoria Hawthorne. In the event of incapacitation or legal detention of either principal, operational control of all family and subsidiary intellectual property automatically reverts to the corporate holding entity: Sterling & Associates LLC.”
Elena stepped down one stair, her eyes narrowing as she studied the legal seal embossed on the document. “That clause violates federal trust ethics codes. It was filed under fraudulent pretenses using concealed financial assets.”
Sterling turned his gaze toward Elena, his smile vanishing as he recognized the sharp, tactical intelligence in her eyes. “And who might you be, my dear? Another disgruntled domestic employee offering legal advice?”
“She’s the federal agent who arrested your business partners last night, Arthur,” Richard said, stepping down beside her. “And she’s about to show you why those documents aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.”
Sterling scoffed, though a flicker of genuine unease crossed his practiced features. “You’re bluffing, Richard. Without the physical retinal verification key from the master vault, the trust transfer cannot be legally validated on the blockchain ledger. And Julian holds the only key.”
Elena pulled a small, ruggedized biometric scanner from her jacket pocket and held it up, the LED display blinking a bright, triumphant green.
“You might want to check your sources, Counselor,” Elena said smoothly. “We didn't need Julian’s eye. We found a high-definition prosthetic retinal lens in his desk drawer configured to bypass the vault scanner automatically. And it’s already unlocked the master database.”
Sterling’s face drained of color as his phone buzzed violently in his coat pocket with an automated alert from the blockchain registry, signaling that the entire trust had just been permanently locked and transferred back to Richard’s sole ownership.

Before Sterling could turn and run to his town car, two federal unmarked cruisers swept around the circular driveway, blocking his exit while Detective Miller stepped out with a fresh set of federal arrest warrants.
